The Barley Mow is a titchy little pub on Picton High Street pervaded with a sense of oddness. I paid it a visit midweek and found it pretty much empty, like the Marie Celeste. With its pink stripey wallpaper and dark green ceiling it doesn’t even look like a pub. Much of what makes it weird is its size. Everything is right next to everything else which can be disorientating, in the same way it’d be weird if you bed, toilet and couch all touched each other. I’m unsure if I caught the place on a good night but I ultimately found this to be quite cosy. If there were more than five people in here it would be atrocious but the fact there weren’t served in the Barley Mow’s favour.

The Barley Mow is one of the pubs down the High Street which I would never ever step foot in usually. I don’t think the place has seen a lick of paint in over 20 years, or any form of cleaning product for that matter. When I went in, I was alone… in terms of customers and staff. I waited for around 5 minutes at least to see a member of staff, and then they greeted me as if I’d only just walked in. This is the one and only time I have been in, and the only time I ever intend to. I have seen signs on the windows(by sign I mean, a piece of A4 paper written on in felt tip pen) advertising free curry and chips when the match is on. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t trust a pint from here, let alone any food!
