You know Leigh Broadway can be, for me, a little pretentious. Those who like to pretend probably enjoy the glitzy coffee come café bars, where you pay nearly a fiver for a coffee. For me however, Avalon’s is tucked right in the mêlée of the hustle and bustle of the Broadway, a café that has seating outside and is welcoming inside. The tables inside are limited but if a tableone is available grab it and keep it. The counter must take up half the size of the shop, The amount of food inside looked lost within in it. Now maybe when we arrived today mid afternoon, it was due to a good day’s trade; in the morning this huge glassed storage counter is no doubt bristling with all sorts of cakes, pies and muffins. Dotted around the café are plenty of hand written notices letting you know the offers of the day, £1.10 for a coffee and two crumpets for instance. The staff were really friendly and the place had a nice atmosphere about it. As I scoffed my heavily buttered teacake, I could glance the many cakes on offer and I thought ooh wish I had tried that! There is another time and there will be. Avalon’s for our short visit was enjoyable, a warm friendly break from a cold Saturday afternoon on the Broadway. I will be back especially to try that Fudge Cake.
