I have to be honest and say that I didn’t choose to come here, I was ourt with my dad and he ‘needed’ food. There is a saying that the customer is always right but it’s not one that has ever been heard in this Subway. If I’m a traditionalist then my dad is off the scale so when he says he wants a bacon sandwich he’s not talking a bacon and … sandwich. So I head down the line. Bacon sandwich please What size? errrr six inch(I’m not a generous son) what bread? that plain looking white one please what fillings do you want? just bacon please, not to crispy no, what other filling do you want? just bacon do you want cheese on that? just bacon any salad? just bacon and what dressing would you like? just bacon do you want a drink with that? JUST BAc… oh yes, latte please Throughout this conversation the staff were looking more and more worried that I had lost the plot but I was sure they pride themselves on making your sandwich the way you want. Of course I’m being a little awkward(aren’t I always) after all I have yet to meet the chef who can produce a decent bacon buttie from a few pieces of pre-prepared overcooked ‘bacon’ of undeterminate origin, and a lot more salt than I should have in a week. The coffee was ok.

I used to be a big fan of Subway and think the ‘eat fresh’ motto was very encouraging– I’m not so convinced anymore. Don’t get me wrong, there is lots of choice and covers Vegetarian, Halal etc but most recently I’ve lost respect for the chain who seemed to cover most sandwich bases. Firstly, there is 5 choices of bread, then also you could have a wrap! Choice of size 6 ins or footlong, and then starts the conveyor of filling choices, hot or cold, sauces and then accompaniments! Phew– sometimes its too much. You can also get meatball pots, soup and salads! My personal favourite used to be the meatball marinara– nice chunky meatballs in a delicious sauce, cheese and a token bit of salad to polish the creation off– I think now the meatballs have shrunk in size and as it’s warm/hot-you get charged more than a regular sandwich for it. I personally I think there is TOO much choice for them to be great at what they do– the food now lays heavy in my stomach afterwards so i no longer feel satisfied when I eat there and the ‘eat fresh’ motto seems a bit lame when you spend 40 mins in there eating lunch and having a chat & see them using the same pot of ingredients that has been sat there since you came in– surely is food is left uncovered it can not longer be deemed ‘fresh’? The ‘customer’ area always seems to be kept clean but service is sometimes slow to wipe tables down and remove remnants from the lazy people who’ve just vacated tables without taking their waste. The original idea is quite appealing but its all a bit stretched too thin to be good.
