The meaning of the word ‘delicatessen’ seems to have been lost over time — it used to mean a rather exclusive yet local shop that sold the best meats and cheese available to anyone who was willing to skip the supermarkets. Now, it seems, ‘deli’ is a word used by any business that does sandwiches/cakes/coffees to make their establishment sound more welcoming. So it annoys me a bit that St Louis calls itself a deli. Having said that, the sandwiches/cakes/coffees that I’ve had from here have always been very edible and well-priced. It’s just not really a deli.
