Save the Mothers trust is a Muslim charity that, among other things sponsors orphans in poor countries, provides maternity hospitals in Pakistan and Africa, provides clean water and food in Africa and Asia, support for the family of the Prophet Muhammad, and the provision for poor families, of animals to be slaughtered in an Islamic ritual(the meat being eaten by the family). Obviously it is up to the individual whether they support all the activities of this charity, though clearly they do a great deal of good work. The shop sells some high quality items, including some very pretty salwar kameez(tunic and trousers — traditional South Asian attire), and a wide variety of shoes. A downside to the shop is the presentation — there were piles of clothes on the floor and a table where donated jewellery and accessories had just been dumped chaotically. If the donations were given more care they would be perceived to have more value and the shop might be more popular.

Not your standard charity shop, I won’t recite what Alexandra has written about the process of bringing in you unwanted items but it is worth doing and they could get a lot of goods if they market their store at the right time of year(i.e. when the students leave in June/July). So full of all sorts of bits and bats its worth a little explore. On top of this it is local charity therefore you money is more likely to affect a person rather than being gobbled up administration like some of the larger charities.

Whilst wandering in a direction I don’t normally wander, I stumbled across this Recycle Shop. It is a small building absolutely packed to the brim with various items you would expect to see in a charity shop and some that you wouldn’t. It is not your usual charity shop. The way it works: 1. You collect all your unwanted clothes and shoes and make sure they are clean. 2. Pop them in separate bags(one for clothes, and one for footwear) 3. Take them into the Recycle Shop where they will be weighed and you will be told how much they will buy your clothes off you. You would have to be pretty tight pocketed to accept the cash that is on offer for your old unwanted goods, but if you are a student, or just absolutely skint it won’t go too frowned upon, they are just happy to get things they can sell on. The money goes towards the Save the Mothers Trust charity which is based in Bradford. (This shop doesn’t have a website but the charity website is in the website section above.) Oh. And. They sell winter scarves for only 50p! They’re nice ones too.
