I stopped in here for tea my first time in Leeds after a long day at the Royal Armouries. The prices weren’t bad(£3.90 for a fish and chips and £0.70 for a can of soda) and, for the meal I had, I would have paid much more. The fish was very good — large, not all breading, and fresh — and the chips were made just for us. The atmosphere was very nice as well — the décor had a modern feel, yet the old stone archway it was built into was left in tact, showing the bricks. Very nice appearance. It has very flexible hours(open«til late»), and the staff was good to us as well. Overall, great experience — best fish I’ve eaten in England, and very good chips as well! Something of note — they serve quite a variety: the normal chippy menu, kebabs, burgers, as well as breakfast, hot sandwiches, and café drinks(coffee, tea, latte). All of them are reasonably priced. After some research when I got home, though, I see the place used to be called Fry-Ups. From the Google maps picture of it, I would say the place had a major upgrade since then!

On yet another late night out about town it had come to that final hour once again, where sustenance of the most calorific variety was required. Before travelling all the way back yonder, my friend and I decided we’d try out Ooh La Laa –partly since it was open for business and partly since we’d not tried it yet. Inside it’s pretty awesome –the décor is simple, but the interesting curvature of being under a railway arch gives it that je né sais quois. To be honest, I wished that it was a little more than a burger bar-come-fish and chippy, just because it’s so cool to sit in. Nonetheless, that’s what you can expect of the cuisine — burgers, fish and chips, amongst other standards of the take away we’ve come to know and love. The scent of a good old chippy is high in the air upon arrival, and the portions are indeed generous for the usual price. For some reason I couldn’t stomach a battered cod at 2am after many boozes, so decided to go a standard cheeseburger and chips. And standard it was! No complaints, but certainly no frills were to be had. Of course, if you want those, you can spend triple the amount at GBK. Yes, it was a robust cheese burger and chips, which I consumed wholly, and enjoyed thoroughly. The staff were happy and served us nicely, the tables were clean, the clientele pleasant and for a change, I was almost the most rowdy in the vicinity.(And I’m not too much of a rowdy drunkard, I can assure you. I might talk your ear off about Skyrim, or Leonard Cohen, but that’d be about it.) In any case, it totally sorted me out and I thank them hugely for my lack of hangover after such an obscene amount of cocktail. Well done! Definitely a solid choice if you’re after something to soak up that wonderful stuff we call booze!
