I like to pop in at lunchtimes for my fish and chips, every time, quick service, friendly staff and very tasty food! Just a shame that its fattening or I’d be in all the time!

You get a lot of chips with a normal portion which is always a good thing and they are good chips, but not exceptional I have found over a few recent visits. Sometimes I’m not keen on the batter they do the fish in, when I get home I have found it sticking to the paper which means my fish ends up half battered. If there’s a few people queuing and only one person serving it can feel like an eternity to get served, I can go in other fish and chip shops and be in an out in a couple of minutes with no fuss. So overall I’d say it’s a very average chippy. Update. Been back once or twice since my original review, and they are still using the same stodgy batter which gives virtually no crispness to the fish. Unfortunately I’m going to go elsewhere for my fish and chips as they don’t seem to take any notice of what people say about their batter.

Way back when I came to Nash’s for my tea. I’d just had a band rehearsal at my friend’s posh flat in Chapel A and I was dying for food before we went out for beers. He suggested I give Nash’s a go and so we popped down. It was certainly easier than making something from scratch, nicer than a ready meal a la Somerfield and cheaper than a meal anywhere else. I was served promptly, which was nice, and went for an easy to please battered sausage, chips and curry sauce. Everything was totally as expected — chips were grand chippy style chips, battered sausage was deliciously bad and the curry sauce was the almost luminous standard curry sauce type sauce! Although Nash’s didn’t blow my mind with culinary skill they certainly satisfied my stomach with their easy food. Nothing amazing, like, but definitely worth a go. Should be on your list of Friday night take-away treats, that’s for sure! *Edit — I had this posted on the wrong Nash’s, so it’s an old review but still worth mentioning!

We came to Nash’s to pick up some tea on our first night in the new Chapel Apple flat and while its reputation precedes itself, and I’d eaten there a few years ago and enjoyed it, we were really disappointed:( Our chips were too chewy and were a really weird dark orange colour, not light and fluffy and delicious like at Kirkstall Fisheries. My sausages were undercooked while Steve’s fish was overcooked, which to be fair must take some skill… Anyway, have been told off by friends who live nearby and love Nash’s and I’ve had to promise to go again but not last thing on a Saturday night because of course the food’s going to be a bit second rate then, apparently…

Possibly the best chip shop that I’ve ever been too, and I’m from Lancashire, so I’ve been to a fair few in my time! Honestly, excellent! They even do battered sausages… they dont do them where I come from. The only way that i could get 5 stars would be if they sold pies too!

Nash’s is, apparently, one of the best places to go for fish and chips in Leeds but as there aren’t any other such prestigious places of its kind in Chapel Allerton, I’d say it is the best place for fish and chips in Chapel Allerton. They are traditional and local as well as good quality. The chips are fat and come in large portions — the way I like them especially as someone else always wants a few even if you asked them before you went to buy any and they said no! Sound familiar? I now read ‘no’ as ‘I’ll have some of yours’. They have a take away shop and a restaurant upstairs but I usually just go for the take away. In the summer time if you don’t fancy chips you can opt for Yorkshire Ice Cream and if you bring along all the family there are children’s and senior citizen’s options. I love their neat way of displaying condiments too.

When someone mentions«the best fish and chip shop in Leeds, and possibly the country» you kinda have to give it a go. For curiosity sake. All in the name of research. Whilst I will admit, the fish and chips here are nice, Nash’s Original Fish and Chip Restaurant isn’t the best I’ve ever tasted. And it’s when someone hauls such an accolade on a place it’s more of a let down than if you’d have just been told, «here’s a nice place to go for fish and chips». Nash’s is a restaurant in the same way that McDonalds is a restaurant, it’s not really, it’s a nice and clean place to sit down in twos or in groups and eat some fast food without having to take it outside or home to eat it. The staff are lovely and enthusiastic and the fish is lovely, and portions are rather large, they come in four sizes, small, regularly, large and giant. I never did see what giant looked like, but if the regular was anything to go by it musta been HUGE. As to be expected these days, the takeaway version of the food prices are lower than the restaurant prices, but in my opinion, with so much fish and chip shop competition, they could do with making the prices a bit more on the modest side. Veggie lasagne and a salad £7.50? I’ve paid less in a rather nice Italian restaurant. In Blackpool, which serves some of the finest fish and chips in the country in my humble opinion, you can get fish, chips, mushy peas, a slice of bread and butter and a pot of tea for a fiver and it’s divine, here they do meal deals too. Fish, chips, bread and butter slice and a cup of tea for £8, if you want mushy peas(which is the law) you need an extra £1.50. So it’s £9.50 for fish and chips meal to eat in. Too much I do believe. Nice, but average, not the best in the country, and not really the best in Leeds. Sorry guys.

this is a very good fish and chip shop. The proprietors have the correct idea. Always have everything available all the time, and cook with very hot oil. None of this«I will put it in for you now sir» rubbish. That is what you get from a local fish shop two minutes walk from me. The place is generally empty. [bad sign] Your heart sinks when the(very friendly) guy says«I will put it in for you now sir». You think ‘right, so I am now going to get an undercooked oily foul tasting fish cooked in only-just-hot-enough oil, with equally vile chips’. Why does this happen? Because the guys running it have no idea even after 10 years. Why do I go there? The answer is that I don’t. I willingly travel the mile to Nash’s where you get loads of chips and properly cooked fish. The fish must be cooked in very hot oil as must the chips. this is the case at Nash’s. The staff are well trained to be quick and efficient and not annoying. Unfortunately the staff at the other place are as a rule slow and miserable. No one wants to see their order painstakingly and slowly wrapped up by nervous fingers. Speed and very hot oil + ready availability are of the essence. The guys running the local shop are too frightened to spend out on having a full range of things available at all times because in their minds this would waste money because of having to throw things out. What they should have done in the beginning was to have a budget for wasted items [say £5000] and then cooked fish and chips fresh in very hot oil all the time, customers or no customers. Gradually people around would realise that these guys had turned the business around [sadly it has always been poor even in previous owner’s hands] and a flow of happy, repeat, customers would build up. the more customers the more the need to keep cooking all the time. Leads to fresh properly cooked fish and chips. the success would be self perpetuating. But no they have chosen to be cautious and just cook small amounts and then cook for people who dribble in. Another fish shop, as well as Nash’s that has it right is Drakes on Scotthall Road near the sports centre. Big turn over. Fish and chips cooked in very hot oil. Constant need to cook more and more. Great fast staff who have service off to a fine art.

Another contender, I am told, for the best fish and chips in Leeds… bizarrely, the other one is also called Nash’s, which I presume is why they felt the need to put ‘the original’ on their sign. The jury is out on whether or not this effort is worth it; in my view, the town centre Nash’s is slightly superior, so they should probably be the ones wanting to distinguish themselves. I don’t eat fish, so I’m going purely on the quality of their veggie options(an admittedly delicious if slightly uninspired vegetable lasagne), ambience(traditional chippy-cum-restaurant), portions(huge) and general enthusiasm from my fish-eating friends(mixed). While there was universal appreciation of the chunky, crispy chips, the fish got a mixed reception, with some complaining of a rather bland and even tasteless quality. For my part, I found the staff welcoming and friendly and the atmosphere fun, in a slightly rough-around-the-edges way, and the prices very reasonable for the portions. Definitely one to check out, but(possibly) not the best fish and chips in Leeds.
