I have been here several times over the years and visited again on Monday when the hunger was as high as the funds were low( The tuna pasta really hit the spot and the portion was huge, was just what I fancied and went down well with two glasses of good old Yorkshire water haha(told you funds were low) I am always impressed with somewhere that(nearly happily) affords the weary Customer a cup of natures finest and free elixir! The menu remains as I recall, really decent and the place always feels clean and tidy. Never the most friendly place tbh, almost frosty and not far from rude, but hey I love a bargain so hey ho)

Located in an incongruous place with a tanning studio and arcade amongst its neighbours, Fish Street sounds like the place a fishmonger would live in a children’s programme. I have frequented Browns on many occasions, and consider the staff to adopt a pleasant enough approach to customer service, yet one that would pull no punches. I am regularly asked for my order from a mouth which is preoccupied with vigorously chewing gum. I was delighted to discover that Browns shares my absolute love for the gastronomically exquisite combination of cheese and marmite! Within the warmth of a panini, the cheddar melts into the yeast based treat to ensure my mouth and soul are content. At the risk of provoking a deluge of bawdy puns and some raising of eyebrows, one of my favourite sandwiches from the more elaborate list, is ‘Sue’s Spicy Sausage’. The meat is accompanied with vine tomatoes and some spicy chutney, to ensure the optimum level of heat. A satisfying place to get a sandwich whilst feeling like you are visiting a less obvious location.

Browns is a bit hidden away on Fish Street near the Leeds City Market and Debenhams. It claims to make specialty sandwiches and they are pretty good and obviously freshly prepared. There is almost a classy yet homely feel to this place as they call jam ‘preserve’ and sandwiches ‘sarnies’. The sandwiches are not expensive for what you get and there is a special ‘designer delights’ section that is not much more than the ‘simple sarnie’. I really like the fact that there is a designated non-smoking outdoor space to eat your lunch at this sandwich shop as it is not something that many establishments consider.

This cute little café is unfortunately placed in Leeds. Situated within the back alleys behind Max Spielman and the Yorkshire bank it is quite easy to overlook it or even miss it entirely. I certainly wouldn’t have noticed it would it not have been for a job interview being held here, and when my former manager said«Let’s go to Browns for a coffee and a chat!» I did not think she meant this one! At first glance I thought its location would reflect in its quality — not so good. Wrong. It was totally lovely. All their sandwiches are handmade in front of you, with far more variety than at, say Caffe Nero, with fresh ingredients and it takes the staff no time to serve you. I’ve always had a good experience with staff who seem pleasant enough, but not necessarily over-enthused. Fillings range from egg mayo, tuna crunch, a variety of chicken styles, cheeses and so on. Their coffees and teas are a little more humble, but cheap and so I’m certainly not complaining. The other bonus is that I’ve always managed to grab a seat outside — although inside it is a little limited. Browns is now a regular coffee stop of mine when I’m in town, even if it’s to while away a bit of time with a good book and one of their drinks, it’s a pleasant experience all round.

Browns is a small café with a few outdoor seats tucked away in a little alley/street. They serve lots of different varieties of sandwich and tea and coffee which was exactly what I needed after a long hard day of window shopping. I was met by a stroppy looking girl who snappily said ‘what d’you want?’ whilst she slouched over a broom and gave me a bit of a frosty look. Umm. I had barely looked at the menu. When I had chosen and went to pay she didn’t look me in the eye or say thanks or have a nice day just grumpily took my cash and got back to cleaning. I mean, fair enough, maybe she had a bad day. but that’s not my fault. I sat down outside to consume my Christmas roll(turkey and stuffing etc) and bit into a dry and tough ball of dough stuffed with a cold stodgy filling. Yuk. What a waste of money.
