One of my now local shops. It’s a great place to grab a quick bite but be warned there is always a queue down the street around lunch time. On my first visit I was given a complimentary tomato and basil soup!(Highly recommended!!) After the lunch time rush there is normally a shortage in the selection but this is a trade for having freshly made ingredients so it’s always worth it.

Great Jerk chicken or Dragons Fire sandwidges, always a favourite on a lunch time when working in Leeds.

In a desperate bid to concentrate on my dissertation a few years ago, I began visiting Leeds Library on a daily basis. Bereft of sleep and any sense of reality, I ventured outside every lunch time to familiarise myself with the outside world, and to refuel with a tasty snack. Due to its convenient proximity to the library, I would frequently arrive at Brod sandwich bar. I became fond of their menu, my particular favourites were the goats cheese salad with grilled peppers and pesto, and their chorizo, brie and pepper melt. Their food always appeared fresh and flavoursome, providing vital sustenance during a stressful time. As a graduate, I still visit Brod regularly and continue to be perfectly satisfied with their offerings. I do not profess my undying love for their fare, but if I am wandering through that part of town, I may indulge in a trip down memory lane. And perhaps a massive cake.

This sandwich bar is one of many in a row that caters for the lunching business people of Leeds. Its unique selling point is the ‘business breakfast’ consisting of a mix of croissants, pain au chocolat and a hot bacon or sausage roll for £3.25, which does sound really nice. Its average offerings of sandwiches are a bit cheaper than more adventurous neighboring options and you can get a breakfast bagel for £1. This is more of a take-away out let as there is not much space inside.

A miniature brother of the successful venture in Headingley, Brod offers masses of fillings artistically scrawled on chalk boards dotted around the tiny corner room on Great George Street. Just the start of a massive string of sandwich bars and cafes the menu choices in here are slightly more decadent consequently with higher prices. Salad boxes are available to with much the same tasty combos as offered in the sandwiches. Hot soup and cold drinks alongside tasty sweets including millionaire shortbread can be gathered for your lunch time meal, be prepared to wait a little though if there is a queue.

All café’s on the outskirts of the city are fighting for customers due to the large amount of trendy bars, café’s and restaurants populating the area. I have tried out what seems millions of different cafes during my 3 years living here and Brod stands out as one of the top places to sit and sip tea due to it’s tasty sandwiches and cutsie yet chic décor. Brod is only a tiny little café, however never feels overly cramp due to so may people taking their scrummy sandwiches away. I like to sit at the window seat and spy on the passer by while sipping on a cup of tea. Otley road is a very popular road for students in particular so they have lots of young custom getting takeaway munch and coffee. Due to Brod being an individual business and not a huge Starbucks or Costa their is a very homely and unique feel to the café. What also makes Brod stand out is it’s menu like no others. Instead of offering boring cakes and BLT’s Brod has pushed the café boundaries by adding more specialist sandwiches such as peking duck(which is just divine. i promise.you have to try it) and tikka massala wraps, yum yum yum. Pop to Brod’s for something a little different. It’s a tiny London café meets a sophisticated version of Subway. In my opinion it definitely beats Starbucks and is kinder on the wallet(you can get a sandwich for under a fiver… pop in for a cheap and tasty lunch soon).

A popular haunt of students and local workers alike come breakfast and lunchtimes, Brod serves up a huge choice of tasty fillings in a choice of breads, managing to give the customer the best of both worlds: the option of ‘posh’ fillings like blue brie and chargrilled Peking duck without the self-conscious trendiness — and accompanying price tags — of many of its neighbouring eateries. It’s unlikely you’ll bag one of the couple of stools in the window, so get your food to take away and stand outside Subway looking smug — you’ll have paid about the same for your meal, but your friends will thank you when you don’t come back reeking of that all-permeating Subway smell…

I first went into Brod simply because I was intrigued by how ridiculously small it appeared from outside(see picture). It doesn’t seem much bigger once you get inside, but this is unimportant as it is essentially a takeaway. Brod will basically make you anything you like, and I mean anything — it’s kind of like the savoury version of its neighbour Shaky Jakes. I last ate here at lunchtime, and as such, plumped for a rather fancy chicken tikka sandwich, but this place is as good for breakfast sandwiches as it is lunchtime. They do the usual plethora of unhealthy English breakfast sandwiches(you know, bacon, sausage, egg, grease) and open at 7:30, meaning you have time to get one in on your way to work/early lecture. The only criticism I can think of is that the service is often quite slow, but Brod does usually pack out at lunchtimes so this is kind of expected. Anyone who wants confirmation of quality of Brod’s sandwiches should be informed that this tiny independent business has managed to hold its own for years despite a Subway opening directly opposite.

A nice addition to Headingly’s eateries. You can get whatever you want pretty much, and the prices are ok too. They do nice chicken butties in fancy bread, and whatever you eat will soak up a hangover. Get in before the lunch time rush to avoid over salivating!
