On a recent visit to Leeds I was wandering through the Victoria Quarter when I spotted the most wonderful-looking display of Belgian chocolates. I was curious to find out how these might compare to the offerings from some of my favourite chocolatiers, and wandered in to make a purchase. I could hardly wait to sample them. Unfortunately my wife and I were deeply disappointed by the quality of the chocolates. The chocolate itself is of moderate quality and undistinguished character. There is nothing seductive about flavour or texture. The fillings were equally unappealing. For example, truffle and grenache fillings were rather insipid with both the Grand Marnier grenache and champagne truffles hardly containing a trace of that exciting alcohol ‘bite’ that such creations normally contain. Instead they consisted mainly of a somewhat sickly, bland paste. They did not deliver on the promise of their wonderful appearance very much at all. I looked up the Bön Bons company in order to see whether the products are indeed authentic Belgian chocolates at all. It appears that they are, but they are sourced from a central franchising organisation rather than artisan producers. Perhaps part of the problem is that you have a ‘middle-man’ offering ready-made brand image and business model, sourcing and supply for which they take their percentage and the result is nice-looking but shoddy product at premium prices. On the plus side the staff are exceedingly friendly and efficient. For fine chocolates, look elsewhere!

If you adore marzipan combined with dark chocolate then you have missed a trick: the dark chocolate assortment bag sold here no longer appears to contain these delectable sweetmeats, which were huge flat squares closer to a chocolate bar than a truffle. Ah well, at least they still do the dark chocolate mint thins, which are pretty heavenly. And I won’t say no to a cherry dipped in chocolate from Bön Bön’s either. Go on, try me, see if I’ll turn it down The great thing about Bön Bön’s is, it’s located right next door to a juice bar. So you can stock up on pounds of calorific naughty goodies, and then head next door for a wheat grass smoothie — which of course will magically undo any damage done! Genius, eh?

This is a great little shop. The chocolates are amaaaaazing and you can get them packed up into little gift boxes so they make perfect presents. They also sell bags of some real old school sweets, like midget gems, bon bons and cinder toffee. Far too tempting for my liking!
