Fantastic sandwiches, very reasonable prices, good-humoured managers and staff. I really enjoy 164, but expect it to be busy during lunch-time in the academic year!

I used to go here as it was a convenient 5 minuet walk from my college, great place to grab a tasty bite to eat and for relatively cheap price too, Thumbs up from me.

Back in 07 – 08 when I was going to school across the street, I’d often frequent this place for a cheap lunch. I remember paying somewhere around 3 quid for a decent sized chicken sandwich on focaccia bread. Out of the(usually) bland food options in the UK, this sandwich was actually really good and flavorful, as well as cheap! I often miss this place and from the looks of it, it still has a strong following :)

You can certainly see why there’s a buzz at Bakery 164, which I presume gets it’s funky name from the street number, as I popped in here one lunch time to find not only large queues but an array of delicious looking lunch time offerings. Even as I browsed extra goodies were being laid out by a happy member of staff, so there are certainly a number of options in this lovely shop. On this occasion I was merely in it for the sweet stuff, and boy — there’s a choice! I wanted a rocky road and there was even a choice to be had in this arena, from white chocolate to milk. I opted for the milk chocolate variety, which was packed with marshmallow, glacé cherries and shortbread biscuits all glued together in a fat slab of Belgian chocolate. For £1.60! Oh. My. This is so much more than the smaller portioned rocky roads I’ve seen in Starbucks and the like. This is a generous portion of sumptuous sugar and it was so good I had to save it for a good cup of tea when I got home. It lasted me three days as, in fact, as it was too nice to eat in one sitting. If their sweets selection is anything to go by, the lunch has got to be delicious. Be warned, the queues mount up on a lunch time but if you’re lucky, the service will be as swift as it was for me when I last came in. Friendly, home cooked and cheap as you like. An awesome choice and bound to be popular with the fresh student meat on campus!

Though it wasn’t the kind of place I could really afford to buy a sandwich from daily whilst a student, I am a big fan of Bakery 164. They make fresh, gourmet sandwiches on Italian breads. They do try and say on their website that their philosophy is to make beautiful sandwiches that are reasonably priced, and whilst, by London prices, this is true, they are still a little steep for their student demographic. Having said that, I would literally kill for one of their bacon, brie, onion marmalade, lettuce and tomato sandwiches right now. They also sell crayfish and rocket sandwiches, and a meatball one is a real favourite amongst my friends, as well as a host of others that will make you stand in the very small shop umm-ing and arr-ing for possibly a little longer than is generally considered acceptable. They have a marginally cheaper selection of simpler classics, such as cheese, tuna, ham etc, but without having much that is special about them, I would be inclined to opt out of 164, and amble across to the union. For something special to much, go in, try the bacon.

It’s a mark of how far our great education system’s come that where twenty years ago students would have counted themselves lucky to get two cans of cold baked beans to rub together, now they perch smugly outside places like this tucking into bagels spread with olive tapenade. No wonder everyone hates them. If you can stomach the sort of conversation that comes from students who can afford to pay a fiver for lunch every day, there is undeniably plenty to enjoy in this sandwich shop, with lots of different breads baked on the premises and a range of Mediterranean ingredients as well as some British classics. The food here is a bit on the pricey side, but the portions are fairly generous and the ingredients are obviously good quality, so you get what you pay for. Just try telling that to the people whose loans are going on chorizo instead of books…

One of the more upmarket eateries by the university, Bakery 164 is a gourmet sandwich joint popular with the people who work in the area and students with too much cash. They do gloriously tasty sandwiches on fresh soft bread — try the meatball — as well as other lunchtime snacks and deserts of a similarly high standard. But, be warned, you have to pay for quality in this place. I used to go once a week while at college nearby as a rare treat, and spend the other four days at the cheaper, less fancy Highway. P. S. Lovely coffee!

Agree with Karim. This place is ace. The bread is always fresh, the fillings are out of this world(how do they think them up?!) — there’s one that’s got olive paste and goat’s cheese and chilli sauce or something. I forgot how much I miss working near here:(

Possibly the most excitingly gourmet sandwich place when you’re close to the university. The Swedish meatball sandwich on bread I’ve never even heard of tastes like an explosion of quality in your mouth. Outrageously filling, you’ll have to pay around £2.50 for these bad boys, but if you’re a) a gourmand or b) have just finished an exam or something and need to celebrate, then Bakery 164 is for you! They also make amazing lattes for £1.20 that are heated to below that heavy scalding level that make you want to cry and drink your coffee at the same time. It’s always packed but don’t try to shoplift as they’ve recently hired some Iranian guy that looks like he murders for laughs.
