40 miles may seem like a long way to drive for tapas, but I would probably drive twice as far for tapas from Carriages. Or better yet I would persuade someone else to drive so I can enjoy a glass or two of one of their lovely wines. The first time we went to Carriages a freak blackout struck the entire pub and meant the kitchen had to shut before finishing our dishes, leaving us simmering with jealousy at other people’s plates of Spanish meatballs, rabbit paella and beef and stilton rolls. However, it is how places cope with such issues that show how good they are really are and the wonderful staff at Carriages brought us as much bread, olives and salad as we could eat, plied us with free drinks and then gave us a 50% off voucher for our next visit when we finally cracked and had to go eat something more substantial. When we returned a few months later the staff remembered us and even took 50% off the pricey wine we chose. We have since been back a few more times and frankly I cannot wait until summer so I can go enjoy some drinks in its lovely beer garden.
