If you like wine, you like Wined Up Here. It is that simple. This is an independent wine merchant, owned and run by the lovely and ever helpful Charlotte. I did know the history of how she came about buying the store, and what she did before, but alas, it slips my mind. Regardless, she, and one or two friends of hers that sometimes help her out, are brilliant. As standard, she will help you through any manner of wine selection. Be it a total novice with a vague idea, or one slightly more picky and selective with their wines looking for something new. I still remember the first time I went in, and asked her what to expect from each of her Pinots. I was instantly explained to about the differences in tastes, textures and purposes between each bottle she had. What it went well with, what the underlying taste would be, the aftertaste, and the situation most suited to it — as well as why. It was superb. I ended up buying 3 bottles in the end, I think. As well as a unique set of wine glasses. She also hosts regular wine tasting events, which whilst you pay a small fee to attend, are made up in all the wine you then consume, the bread, cheese and pâté, and cake, and the 10% discount on any wine purchased that night. Score! Sadly, she doesn’t update the website very often(it still thinks it’s December), and so the best way to know what’s coming up is by calling or popping in. Oh, did I mention that all the wines have hand written labels hung on them to explain what they are/what to expect? Whoops! Sublime, dear!

Fantastic independent wine shop, which is worth visiting for a bottle of something special for an occasion. With very helpful and friendly customer service, there is no pressure to buy, just really good advice from the owner who really knows what she is talking about. A good range of quality wine, including smaller vineyards from NZ and Australia. The only downside is that it is not open past 6pm, so plan to visit during the day and allow time to make a relaxed, informed choice.

Oooh Wined Up Here really spoiled us last night. 8 different wines and a grappa and some snacks(own up, who ate all the parma ham?!) was enough to keep us happy for a whole evening. It’s a gorgeous shop, inbetween Kingston and Norbiton(no, i’m still not sure where they are either, but I’m from the other side of London) it’s only 20 minutes away from Waterloo though so don’t feel like it’s too far away to get to. The shop is perfect. Wines that suit everyone and Charlotte the owner is very knowledgable. She helped me find a wine that she didn’t stock too which was lovely of her. I like that each bottle has a label(handwritten!) so you know what to expect when you’re drinking. A lot of the cheaper wines were lovely too — i actually liked them more than the most expensive one we tried. There’s a lot of wines for all price ranges — i think sometimes shops can this can feel a bit scary if you don’t know about wine, and that’s what people end up in Threshers instead. Wined Up Here takes all of this away. I also bought two mid price bottles of red. It’s a very clever ploy — get your customers drunk and they’ll buy more. I like it. If you do get the chance to go to a wine tasting(or if indeed, the lovely Amethyst organises another one for Qypers) then do go. You’ll have a great evening.

Helpfully close to Norbiton station, this friendly and appealing wine shop is well worth a visit, whether you’re dropping in for a bottle for dinner or browsing for a special gift. The owner Charlotte is knowledgeable, but friendly and approachable too, so there’s excellent guidance should you want it. As well as shelves crammed with an impressive selection of wines(the ones we tasted at last night’s qype event were interesting and great value for money), there is a range of accessories including some of the loveliest bottle-stoppers I’ve seen. Elegant wine coolers, Riedel glasses, funnels and decanters: the amount of choice is amazing for a small, independent shop. This is a world away from the wine chains, without being the least bit intimidating. You should drop and see for yourself if you’re in the area — in fact, it’s definitely worth a special trip!

You want wine. You want good wine. You’re not a £4 Tesco discount wine buyer. You want to drink something that’s quality. You want to go somewhere where they have an informed opinion. You want a wine merchant to give you good advice. You want to know you’re not getting a pre-written script recital from a new graduate about a bottle of Bordeaux. You want an occasional wine-testing event. You live in south-west London. You’re going here.

This very attractive independent wine shop — with the punning name — is a recent addition to the area. Not the place to visit if you’re after a bottle of cheap plonk for a budget night in, instead it beckons when you want a special occasion wine for yourself, to complement a memorable meal, or to offer as a gift. The name theme continues with many of the wines; film aficionados are sure to be tempted by Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Director’s Cut’ Chardonnay at £14.65 or his Pinot Noir at £17.75. If you’re a fan of full bodied Aussie beauties opt for the intriguingly titled ‘Cockfighter’s Ghost’ at £15.50, a Tasmanian Pinot Noir. A townie with countryside cravings might weaken at the sight of ‘Ten Minutes by Tractor’(another Pinot Noir from Oz). When you are recovering from the night before, and still have a healthy wallet, your tipple of choice could be ‘Dead Arm’ Shiraz(Aussie again) at £27.25. For the dedicated oenophile, or enthusiastic imbiber, there’s an excellent choice of wine-related accessories to choose from encompassing bottle openers, wine savers, glasses, silver champagne buckets and exquisite swarovski butterfly stoppers. The very knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming owner holds tutored and informal tastings on a regular basis.
