Loved this historic eatery with its beautiful location, only wished we’d visited in summer to sit outside by the sea. Pay attention to hours food is served as there is a mid-afternoon break. Service was friendly and prompt. Prices were moderate, especially for very fresh fish. We ordered as appetizers the crevettes which were delicious if a tad bit too garlicky and the fish cakes which were meaty with a good tangy sauce. Our haddock and cod fish & chips were crispy(not greasy) and tasted very fresh. We took the medium size portion of 5 size options and it was plenty for our appetites. The treacle sponge pudding with hot custard was also quite good, although we were too full to finish it all. If ever in South Devon, we’d love to go back to it.

The quiet, tranquil beach of Slapton Sands is where the U.S. Army carried out secret preparations in advance of D-Day. Located on the seafront you’ll find the Start Bay Inn, a quaint little pub and restaurant. The staff are friendly, charming and very helpful. There’s ample seating indoors and out. Despite being off the beaten track seems to attract good business, not hectic just steady. It makes a great venue for enjoying a long lazy afternoon in the sun with friend. The food on offer is hearty and big portions. Good value for money. I would say the Start Bay is a hidden treasure.

As far as I’m aware, you have to drive to get here. But it’s worth it. The BEST Fish restaurant I’ve ever visited,(and I include the North of England). It’s right on Slapton Sands and they sell fish collected from a boat during the day. Also, Haddock, Plaice, Lobster, and on and on… Good cask beer too. Get there early as it’s VERY popular.
