I personally like Slug and Lettuce in Hove. The food is good, plenty of space and friendly staff. The clientelle though, it’s kinda weird cos I see the wannabe’s from across the road actually drink here as to show retaliation that they are bored and sit outside Slug in full view. Is it just my imagination?. Crazy huh lol The last time I was here, I sat outside with a pint and it was such a lovely day.

Decent chain pub, reasonable prices and good vouchercloud deals. Tidy and busy. Food menu changes frequently which is good and the range of food on offer is nice. It used to be hit and miss whether the food was any good but this appears to have improved recently quite a bit.

The whole Slug and Lettuce franchise is a little bit of an enigma to me: it’s a step up from the whole Wetherspoons disaster, but it seems to do so by making the prices higher, although the quality seems much the same. I suppose higher prices do keep out the typical Wetherspoons crowd, but I’m not sure that’s quite enough to make me like it. That’s probably the best way to describe this particular Slug and Lettuce: an upmarket Wetherspoons. It certainly feels thus inside: lots of tables, plenty of drinks available, lots of space to stand, although this one is also often empty: I suppose most of the customers prefer the actual Wetherspoons across the road. The food and drink is overpriced, and not really that good for the money paid. The drinks are perfectly fine, although the choice is limited to lagers and wine, and the wine is a bit naff. Still, a bit naff fits the bland food: pub classics, big portions, and not much flavour. Not worth the money really: if you need a cheap pub atmosphere, as said above, there’s a Wetherspoon’s across the road.

I’m not a fan of chain pubs in general and The Slug and Lettuce is unlikely to change my mind. The décor is bland and generic and the atmosphere is nothing special. The two things it has over other chains is outdoor seating for spring and summer days and an extensive menu including sharing platters. Naturally, the dishes lean towards easy fresh and frozen foods but on a sunny day — it’s an okay place to catch up with a friend over lunch.

The Slug & Lettuce brand is reliably above average. This particular pub-cum-restaurant is decidedly ugly from the outside, but that just seems to be the case with the majority of the businesses on George Street. This town high street hosts particularly uninspired architecture, which makes the Slug & Lettuce look, well, rather sluggish. Step inside however and you’re thankfully transported from the dullness and taken to a place that is gentle and simplistic in its tastefulness. Although more expensive than some other chain pubs, like the terrible Weatherspoons across the way, the Slug & Lettuce does still offer value for money. The food is tasty enough — though best suited for lunch rather than a romantic evening meal. The staff are a friendly enough bunch, though rather quiet, but this is not such a bad thing. Overall this is a solid 3-star affair. If you’re on the high street and want a quick drink or bite to eat for less than £10 a head, you’re sorted. If you’re after a fancier job, then go somewhere along Church Road instead.

This is a combination of pub/bar/restaurant and it definitely a step above the Wetherspoons which is right across the high street. It is a tad pricey but can make for a fun night out.
