If I lived near Dean & Perry Jenkins I’d probably get most of my groceries from them. A genuine neighbourhood business, they have been trading from the same shop since the seventies and clearly have a strong customer base. Alongside standard groceries like carrots, leeks, potatoes, parsnips, leeks, apples, pears and bananas, they usually sell fresh watercress, rocket, fennel, beetroot and plum & vine tomatoes. They also sell local butter, cheese, milk, honey and free range eggs. Prices are much cheaper than local supermarkets and the staff can usually tell you exactly where every product is from. What’s not to love?

I love the fact that independent shops and off licenses in this country are taking the initiative(and the power back from the large chains) by offering a delivery service, often free and in the case of Dean and Perry same day too. Well, if you order by 9am! Although I’ve never used the same day option, I have on more than one occasion taken advantage of the delivery service, and it feels great to be supporting the local greengrocer!

This place has everything you want from a grocers, essentially fruit, vegetables and cheap eggs. Unlike with a number of similar shops, the produce seems fresh and ripe, which is always a bonus. It also happens to be quite cheap; I bought a couple of oranges, bananas, apples and leeks for less than £2. The addition of eggs is also welcome, I bought 6 free range eggs for 95p. If you are in the area and need anything fresh, definitely come here.

Dean and Perry Jenkins has a real farmer’s market feel to it, as opposed to a regular corner shop — possibly because much of the fruits and vegetables are set up outside the shop, and everything looks nice and fresh. There are actually signs by each item saying whether they have been imported from other parts of England or other countries. Inside, there’s some basic groceries: eggs, dairy and snacks; along with a table of freshly-made cookies, brownies and bread. Mmm. The cookies yesterday were little, iced gingerbread men. Another highlight: one shelf displays jars of honey that have been made here in Sussex. Although the shop is small, it seems to be quite popular. It was the busiest on George Street, and took some good manoeuvring to make it all the way through. If you’re in the area, it’s a good place for fruits and veg. And fresh bread.
