Arrived at 8pm on a Tuesday night… the restaurant section was really busy… I got seated but then ignored for more than 15 minutes so I departed… the food looked good but I couldn’t seem to get served…

Don’t even bother, its not worth the time and effort. Party of 7 on a Sunday evening. Arrived at 5.00, left 2 hours later without eating. Rude assistant manager, appalling service throughout. Apparent lack of staff at all levels. Disgruntled customers all round. Another party were presented with the incorrect bill,(at least they had eaten!!), and waited 40 minutes for the fault to be corrected. Heard the excuse ‘orders not getting through to the kitchen’ at least three times. Do yourself a favour and go to a roadside burger van. Dare not write to Chef & Brewer in case they send a voucher.

I would rather give it no stars, but I don’t have the option. We were a party of 13& pre-booked for Sun 2nd October 2011 @ 1.00pm. To begin with our table wasn’t ready, we then waited an hour for drinks & then only half of the table were served! The bitter had to be sent back twice & we were told one of our party would have to wait an hour for the Fosters as it had to settle after being delivered in the boot of a car! We waited an hour & a half for our ‘food’, which to be honest was less than second rate. Some were cold, some were un-edible and the caesar salad was literally a lump of chicken thrown on some soggy lettuce and two ‘chunks’ of stale bread ripped from a loaf! After complaining, the same dish was brought back with a few extra lumps of bread! This was supposed to be a special occasion and our day was completely ruined; we complained to two different members of staff claiming to be the Manager, but were met with un-apologetic excuses. We witnessed two other tables complaining & one table refused to pay their bill. We have frequented the Green Man for many years and always had good food & good service; unfortunately no more. Please Chef & Brewer You need to investigate why this beautiful pub is being dragged down, you are losing customers drastically. I certainly won’t be returning until it’s had a change of management!

We live very locally so gave this pub 3 attempts to make sure it wasn’t bad luck but sadly it wasn’t. The food is clearly frozen and microwaved but we could have gotten over that if it wasn’t still frozen inside on the first occasion. The second time was an evening during the week a couple of weeks later, and the food arrived cold when the pub was nearly empty and the waiters looked like they wanted to be somewhere else!!! The last and final time(as we definately won’t be returning for a 4th attempt!!!), some friends came over for my birthday so decided we’d try their sunday lunch. The mains was average but the desserts and the service were absolutely appauling!!! My dessert was nothing like the description on the menu and was not edible(and I eat anything if it’s sweet!!!), my friend’s lime pie was dry and tasteless and the other guest unfortunate enough to order a dessert as a treat wish he hadn’t!!! When I asked the waiter in good humour why my dessert was so different to the menu he denied it and got really shirty. The manager walked past and said there must be something wrong with my taste buds!!! Clearly they’re not fussed about customers… it’s a shame but because the pub has been there a long time and it has nice settings they don’t need to please people as there are enough customers to make up the numbers! I wouldn’t go again even if they gave us a free meal for 10!!! You’ve been warned.

Recommended by a friend sometime ago and since then we have been several times. It is part of a chain(Chef & Brewer) but you wouldn’t think it. The food is always really tasty and the portions are plentiful. The service is friendly and fast and the views from the extension at the back of the pub are fantastic. It’s a very popular pub and gets busy very quickly — especially on the weekend which can be a problem when parking — there are steps to correct this though as there is an overflow car park now. That said the car park and the pub are not huge — it still retains a friendly atmosphere. There’s plenty of places for the kids to run outside in the summer and as it’s situated in a small village it’s fairly safe. We have had normal pub grub, Sunday lunches and recently a set Christmas meal. All of which were good value for money, well cooked and very tasty.

The Green Man is situated in the village of Offley perched on the top of a hill about 3 miles outside Hitchin. It’s definitely a pub that specialises in eating. There’s a large wintergarden part out the back with lots of tables in and a small beer garden with great views across the valley towards Hitchin. The menu is huge and supplemented by a massive ‘specials’ board that changes from week to week. The selection of real ales is pretty impressive to and they seem well kept and in good condition. The wine list is extensive and should cater for most tastes. It’s a popular place and despite the large car park it can get difficult to find a space at peak times. You’ll need to book ahead at these times too if you want to guarantee a table. The food is good, if a trifle overpriced in my opinion. The staff are friendly and the service is swift. If you’re looking to eat in a country-style pub you could do a lot worse than pay a visit to the Green Man.
