Living in Enfield, Hertford is only a 15 minutes train ride away. As we have good friends who live there, we sometimes decide to make the journey and meet up for a pub lunch here. There’s a great selection of tasty burgers on the menu, and they have a large selection of ales that are constantly changing. There’s a lot of space, and when the weather is nice, a reasonable amount of space outside.
There are also a stack of board games, but not all the pieces are always there, so it can making playing them a bit difficult. It’s just one of those old style English pubs that is enjoyable to hang out with for the day and drink some ales. I can highly recommend them!

There is a nice outside area here, but it is such a shame it is not on the other side of the pub, by the canal (the just isn’t any room though a view over the canal from inside the pub is pretty sweet too!)
Pub has a great beer selection and some pretty nice burgers too.

Nice pub, well preserved, lots of real ales, food looks a good notch higher than the other pubs in town, nice setting. ‘Mellow’ music which really pleases or irritates according to your mood.

I blow hot and cold over the Old Barge.
In theory when you look at the location alone it should be 5 stars.
But there is something about it that brings it down. Yes, there’s lots of beer and real ale on tap as described by others below. Yes, it’s next to the river in hertford.
But it’s a weird shape, long and thin. In the evenings you walk in and it feels packed — get halfway to the back and it feels empty.
On hot summer afternoons when it should be at it’s best it can be like a kids playground outside — toddlers and teenagers showing off their acne covered skinny muscle-​less frames.
Hmmmmm… So 5 stars for location, real ale etc but the other things bring it down to a 3.

Great pub, as long as you like real ale. Went here on a stag do and my ale-​loving mates were rubbing their hands in delight at the bar, choosing from all the beers. If, however, you want to drink cocktails and chat up girls, this is definitely not the place for you.

I go to this pub all the time [not my choice but hubby’s]
This is one of the only pub’s in hertford with a oldish feel with the wood burning fire’s [not seen them on so far this year though] and wooden features.
They have a very wide selection of beers and ale’s, the staff are all nice and know what they are doing. The food is nothing special but okay pub grub.
The place could do with a good clean though although the women’s toilets have been tarted up but not the best job.
The men’s toilets are really bad according to hubby.
The pub did get into the good pub guide for its beer this year.
