The old etonian is one of my fave return to restaurants. The food never disappoints, it’s hearty portion sizes and feels very homely. In summer the cute outside courtyard overlooking the hill is wonderful and the fairy lights as the sun sets give it a perfect ambiance. The second you run out of bread there’s a waiter ready to offer you more… my other half loves that bit the most strangely! My only drawback is the deserts. While much love and attention is given to the starters and mains, the puddings always seem like an add-on. Still, you can’t go wrong with a cheese board!

The inappropriately named Old Etonian is set in the pretty village of Harrow On The Hill near a rival school, French cuisine(mixed with some Italian delights) are on offer here and i must say the food is really first class. Open for lunch and dinner the menu offers some delightful fish and salad dishes as well as an excellent meat selection. We started with beef cappacio and rocket salad as a starter and then I chose the Chicken Supreme with sauté potato and Spinach while my daughter preferred the courgette penne pastA with pesto sauce. Even with a glass of wine and several soft drinks the price was reasonable at a mere £45 including service. i only dropped a star because despite the pleasant staff the service was a little slow, that said its probably because everything is freshly made so i cant complain.

How a place in the Harrow –on-the Hill High St next to Harrow School came to be called The Old Etonian will only be of interest to those from either school, but it’s an amusing juxtaposition for those who enjoy that sort of thing. For Americans, it’s a bit like naming the restaurant at The Charles, ‘The Yale’. The Old Etonian has comfortable bentwood and wicker chairs and white tablecloths, and faces south down West Hill, so the low-ceilinged room is light. The two staff are, I venture, Italian rather than French but experienced and friendly and the menu is full of traditional French dishes and the food well cooked. I had a delicious sole Waleska and a fine(separate) dish of vegetables and was most content. Wine by the glass — unnamed but I spotted a claret label — was actually very good and a mere £3.50. The only disappointment was the coffee, which was too weak, though it came with no less than four chocolates. But otherwise an excellent meal at a good price — and free wi-fi.
