Perhaps I had higher expectations for my first ever«fish and chips», but honestly this place was just«ok». Generous portions and a good value, but overall I was not that impressed with the flavor of the dish. The outside seating area was beautiful but our service was poor which impacted the overall rating. Try harder Hatch.

I have very fond memories here at the Hatch. While on vacation a few years ago in England, we stayed in Basingstoke, and a short drive from The Hatch. Our local guide recommended this place as we ended up eating here twice during our short stay. Everything was superb. There’s plenty of room here, inside and out. The garden was beautiful and it’s a pleasant place to enjoy your meal or some spirits. I believe I had their bitter beer, red wine, and a bitter shandy as it was all really good. The thing is I’m not really a beer guy, but I became one once I took this trip to England. The Hatch was my first beer experience in England, and it won me over. It was very busy on our first visit, I ordered the lamb dish and it was awesome, cooked to perfection — just the way lamb should be. We were told they were known for this dessert called«Treacle Sponge», it reminded me of a Tres Leches and Flan put together, and I’d say it was one of the absolute best desserts I’ve ever had in my life. Not something you’d eat everyday, but you’ll have to experience at least one time in your life. I’m happy to have done it twice. Customer service was superb and very friendly, our waters were filled promptly. If I lived here this would totally be my local regular hangout, they’d have to force me to pay rent. It was a spectacular experience and hopefully someday I will have a chance to go back.
