This is a terrific little pub in a largely disused dock at the edge of the towns main shopping centre. It’s got 3 main seating areas, one with views as you board, the main bar area in the bowels of the boat and finally an outside area with lots of tables and chairs ‘ashore’ near the gangplank. The staff are friendly and the beer, including real ale is good. The home cooked food is excellent and very reasonably priced. The fish and chips in particular were probably the best I’ve had in Northeast Lincs, high praise indeed from an ex trawlerman. Me and my partner have also tried the lasagne and steak pie. The lasagne was intensely tasty and as good as any I’ve had anywhere. The pie was great, full of lean tender meat and absolutely no nasty bits. My partner said it was as good as Steels in Cleethorpes. Next you’re in the town centre and want a pint or a bite look no further!

What can I say, it’s the Barge. Situated on the riverhead — after all it is actually a proper barge next to the bus station. Renowned in this area as the place to go for students /alternative music fans although a wide variety of people do frequent the place. Under the stairs used to be the goth area but it’s moved on a bit since then. I pop in every now and again but not as much as I used to when I was younger. If you ever go in and meet some of the older regulars why don’t you ask them if they were there the night a lion visited(or if they even know about it)…there’s a story in itself and there wasn’t many of us in on that cold night.

The barge is a pub on the cannal, great little pub, worth a visit, it’s in a central location next to the shopping centre and various café’s and bars. try the barge as it’s a bit different from other places as how cool is it to have a drink on a boat !!

The Barge is just that a Barge and a GREAT pub. There is a small glass area on the top with a gangplank leading up. Beware when you have had a few or it is icy or snowy. You could end up in the river as many have. Below decks there is a large seating area with a bar. Outside are seats with umbrella’s, and as this is the town centre, a great meeting place next to the bus station. The bar staff are great and friendly and remember what regulars drink. Jugs of cocktails for around £9 are yummy and a great selection. You can also buy jugs of beer for sharing. A pint is around the £2 mark. The music from the jukebox can be very loud in the evening but everyone is friendly and chatty and are good at yelling over it. Alternate. A mix of students, Goths, Punks, Bikers and Hippies plus quite a few ordinary folk. Never seen any trouble and if any started it would be short lived. It can be quiet or packed to the rafters. do Barges have rafters? There is a sign that the staff have posted at the door(so they don’t keep getting told) Yes, We know the boat tilts! But it’s towards the bar and if you drink enough you think it’s normal :0) Opposite is Gullivers nightclub, Gullies, and Surfers for moving onto after closing time which can be any time up to 1am.
