This is a wonderful, lifesize bronze sculpture found on the main concourse of the Bus Station! It depicts a pair of lovers embracing; the man is wearing dungarees and the woman a mini dress and a tam-‘o-shanter. The sculptor was John Clinch(1934 – 2001) — what a perfect surname for this work !! — and I first came across his work in Cardiff Bay, in particular, the statues Pobl Fel Ni(People Like Us). The title comes from the Scots verb ‘winch’ which means to kiss and cuddle. The full name of ‘Wincher’s Stance’ was selected from 600 suggestions submitted to the local paper, and came from a Miss Susan Richie who won a trip to Paris! The sculpture was unveiled by both John Clinch and Susan Richie in 1995 at the opening of the newly refurbished Bus Station.
