Being a veggie going out for food can be a bit hit or miss so i’m always a bit nervous about trying new places! After one look at the menu though, my nerves melted away! :) I opted for the soup and sandwich for lunch, both of which were made with ACTUAL seasonal veg which is rare. Other places take note!!! The soup, which is always vegetarian, was full of flavour and piping hot. As for the sandwich, being veggie means you get to try new combinations, I opted for«The Misunderstood» a winning combination of roasted root veggies and brie! They do good simple food REALLY well, the menu has something for everyone without being too long winded! Service was relaxed which also meant me and my friend were relaxed! Can’t wait to go back to try the pancakes! :)

I’m going to guess I heard about this place more than a year ago and I have only just made it around to visiting. Such are the hazards of living in a city with so many awesome eating/drinking destinations! I arranged to meet a friend for lunch here but needed to get some work done first. I was slightly manic when I arrived as I was a little flustered, a little late and bloody starving. The guy working there was really chilled which was just what I needed, he directed me to a table and delivered me a menu. I quickly ordered chips and a coke, and then when he returned with my coke I also ordered a green tea. Waiters must really hate people like me. Sorry. As I chatted on the phone, I admired the décor of this place. It’s really sleek, with nice wooden interiors, tranquil coloured walls as well as a really light and bright airy feeling from the large windows and high roof. The chips arrived with salt & vinegar. I was worried by how chunky they were but they were actually delicious. Soft and squidgy middle, slightly crispy on the outside. Importantly, it was food and I was starving so I scoffed this as quickly as humanly possible. When my lunch date arrived(the dashing Barry M), we ordered some more food. I got the salmon gravlax which came with pickled cucumber and toast. The salmon was delicious, that really smokey, silky salmon of which I normally dream about and it went well with the pickled cucumber and toast. I think some cream cheese would take this dish from delicious to OMGHEAVEN but then that’s just me. Everything was reasonable priced, the staff were lovely, the seats were comfortable and it wasn’t overly noisy but had good tunes. I can’t wait to pay it another visit.

Brilliant little neighbourhood café that has valiantly survived flames and floods from their upstairs neighbours! The staff is really friendly and seem to have a good memory of returning customers, always nice and makes one feel welcome! Lovely décor, really tasty colourful food and affordable prices. Great coffee and cake selection too. Oh and they do a bacon & pancake breakfast — need I say anymore?

Absolutely lovely in every way. Food was wonderful, wine was great, music and ambience equally pleasant. Highly recommended.

Now re-opened: Sideways was on an extended hiatus recently. Apparently this was due to flood damage. Its been redecorated and is back up an running and I couldn’t be more chuffed for them. If you haven’t been to this bright airy little café yet, put it on yer to-do list. Great spot for vegetarians too.

Reasonably priced for good quality, yummy food. I tried their vegetable soup of the day, potato leak, with a side salad. My friend had a chicken sandwich with melted cheese. Both our meals smelled delicious and tasted the same. It was quiet at 12:30 on a sunday afternoon in the neighbourhood and in the café. The wood tables and barstools give it a rustic laid back vibe. I will be back for another meal and perhaps an afternoon coffee.

Sideways is a geat choice and is ideal for a quickworking lunch through to a evening meal. Has a great feel to it and the food is fantastic. I only found out about this place through a leaflet that came through the door.

Surprisingly good food in a surprising area — This place would be more at home in the Byres road surrounds than it is up this end of town. Nevertheless, it was a welcome addition to the neighborhood when i needed somewhere to bunker down for a few hours. I went quite early lunch time, so not many other people in but me. Nevertheless, i found my bum-space on a SUPER comfy couch and ordered. I got a smoked fish omellette — which for the price, was a really decent size! Very tasty, very filling, Student budget friendly. Also had a black coffee, which was equally quite yummy. Would be a great place to go for lunch or dinner, and get more off their menu. Exciting stuff!

A few months ago I popped in here for a late brunch and the food was superb. Returning for dinner I was stunned by how good it was. The menu is quite foodie and it was very hard to choose what to eat. I thoroughly enjoyed everything I had… and everything I could steal from my partner’s plate. Portions were generous. A limited wine menu, but all superb.(There is an impressive number of beers on tap, not the usual Glasgow pub fare.) This is a superb spot for lunch and I suspect caters towards business lunches during the week. Sideways is also looking to corner the afternoon cake market so there is a delicious selection of fresh, home made desserts and cakes on offer(the baked cheesecake was lovely). The service was friendly and efficient and overall Sideways offered superb value for money. I’ll be back.

I first noticed Sideways as I was passing on my way to work. Isn’t that the name of that Alexander Payne film? I couldn’t quite believe my eyes. I jumped at the first chance I got to go for lunch one Sunday and I was delighted with the results. There is definitely a relaxed, hipsterish vibe to the place — but not too hipsterish! Enough to keep the riff-raff away, whilst remaining thankfully douche-free. The interior is airy and spacious. There are some nice looking sofas in one corner and the tables are nicely spaced so you don’t get that cluttered, hemmed-in feeling. Just sit down and relax. It’s the perfect place for lunch/brunch and/or a light boozy afternoon to catch up with a friend. That’s right — there’s booze! But hey man, chill. It’s tastefully done. There is a small selection of ciders, ales, lagers, and wine for the West End mums. Not sure about Merlot… The coffee is excellent, and the food is superb. I’ve eaten here twice so far. The menu is small(in a good way) with a lovely selection of brunch & lunch options. Prices range from £5-£8 or so. On Sundays they offer a roast option as well(£9 from memory). The staff are attentive and easy-going, as you would expect. On my first visit I had soup & a pastrami sandwich, which was superb. The next time I went for the Sideways Breakfast. Very professional. You know it’s posh when your bacon is grilled. It’s also the first fry-up I have ever had which filled me up yet did not leave me feeling burpy and comatose. Mmmm. Just right.

«Shock-horror, quality café turns up in Charing Cross.» Unless you fancy boozing or curry there isn’t much more happening in this neck of the woods. So I was plesantly surprised to stumble upon Sideways, which offers something different for the area. Its a really great looking place, nice and airy, bright and inviting. There were chilled tunes being hand picked by the waiting staff and at times I felt I could have been sipping my coffee in an episode of ‘Friends’. Coffee really was spot on and the sandwich and soup combo tasty and really good value for money. We hung around for quite a while and didn’t feel rushed or harrased in the slightest, with staff being friendy and attentive. Defo the best café /bistro in Charing X!

I was supposed to not be working. I was supposed to be having a break from seeking out awesome business and ‘not flipping Unilocaling!’(phrase is copyright of wife). How, dear reader, was I to know that in dropping off the older child-like creature at nursery, I’d turn the corner to be confronted by this joint ‘just open’(ing). ‘Just three weeks old’ she said ’oooft’ says i like an addict savoring the next hit. From there it went as follows. I plonked my lazy ass on an awesomely comfortable couch in the window(should the comfy one not be facing out the window rather than into the place?) and ordered what turned out to be a splendid latte in a city quickly developing a taste for good bean juice. Style wise, this place is quite the breath of fresh air. It’s light, it’s bright, it’s very uncluttered and seems very welcoming. Grub wise, it’s very much the same as the décor. Light, fresh and thoughtfully crafted by the looks of it. Once the caffiene had kicked in, I even ordered some chili fried eggs on toast, which despite looking a little pricy on arrival, turned out to be just right with a healty portion of toast and butter. The neat touch of serving it up in the frying pan actually worked for me and made it beyond the gimmicky feel. Service wise this visit(and another subsequent with smaller child in tow) proved to be spot on. Polite, attentive, friendly, helpful and well, just right. I like the joint. It seems to me that it has several different hats, that it appears to wear equally well. Brunch/breakfast on my visit was pretty spot on, whislt the main menu looks like there’s been too much time spent on crafting that it surely can’t be anything other than good… suppose I’ll just have to book in a return visit!
