On the advice of a colleague, we tried the roll and sausage at Seb & Mili’s on Friday there. The beef lorne sausage(which I think they make themselves) was good quality and very tasty. Two slices in the roll made it a meal! The roll was grilled — a nice touch! It came with a dollop of hollandaise(or similar) and, all in all, was very very tasty! At £2.95 it’s at the expensive end of the morning roll scene in Glasgow, but it really is a case of «you get what you pay for». Given we only get a breakfast roll once a week(to celebrate the arrival of the weekend), we didn’t mind paying the premium for a quality product.

Seb & Mili is in the basement of 192 St Vincent Street. If you can’t find it just look out for their lovely sign bike chained to the railings and you know you are in the right spot. The vibe in Seb & Mili is very relaxed but buzzing during the lunch service. When you walk in the door the first thing that smacks you in the face is the beautiful display of tempting cakes and beautiful smelling fresh bread. Given that it is in the basement it was actually really well lit(very important when you want to take lots of pictures:-)) It was also much bigger than I expected and there is lots of seating — but beware it fills up at lunch time VERY quickly.
The staff were really welcoming and helpful. Our waitress was really lovely but clearly had a lot going on during a busy lunch service because it was impossible to grab her attention to order another coffee. To be honest I was surprised they even offered table service I presumed it would be an order at the counter place… so that was a nice touch. The menu is jam-packed full of tempting brunch option which are available to order all day and tasty sounding deli sandwiches and salads. Never one to look past a good pastrami sandwich I ordered the Brisket Deli Sandwich — Pastrami crusted, smoked & slow cooked, with garlic mayo and sauerkraut on a pretzel bun. Roz and I also order a portion of the Truffled Mac and Cheese to share described as 3 cheese macaroni pasta, mushrooms, leeks and truffle oil. The food arrived pretty quickly(as you would expect in a slick lunch spot) my sandwich was absolutely gorgeous… the generous serving of beef were light slithers of super smokey pastrami which tasted incredible, the flavour of the smokey meaty was only enhanced by the perfectly heavy doughy pretzel bun. It was quite a salty dish but in the best way. God — my mouth is salivating just remembering how good it was. This came served with a good-sized portion of deliciously crunchy vegetable crisps, which I think may have been made in-house. The Mac and Cheese I was less fussed about — don’t get me wrong there was nothing wrong with it at all, it just wasn’t to my taste. I think it is because I like a crust on my mac and this portion didn’t have one. It was a lovely big portion for only £5 and was packed with mushrooms and leeks which really came out in the flavour. If you like mushrooms in your mac this is definitely one for you to try because it had a really strong mushroom/truffle taste which was nice. I couldn’t leave without buying a few cakes to take home — I settled on a crueller which was a wonderfully greasy ring of sweetness. It is really heavy tho so I was glad I waited a few hours after my lunch to eat this. I also purchased what I was told was a salted caramel donut for MrG… sadly the salted caramel filling was missing so I paid £2 of a ball of glazed dough which was a little disappointing. For the record Roz bought one of these Salted Caramel donuts too, her’s wasn’t empty tho it was filled with Nutella!!! I would definitely recommend Seb & Mili as a delicious weekday breakfast or lunch spot. It’s not open at the weekend which is a shame as I am sure it would be jumping with the city’s brunch lovers.

Just finishing up my lunch and thought I’d share my views on Seb & Mill. This year I’ve resolved to ditch the packed lunch and try at least one new place a week(instead of scurrying up to the work canteen) to get me through my working day. Today I wandered down to Seb & Mill pretty much blind. First thing I noticed was that it was a full blown bakery, in the middle of town so that was nice. After recently visiting Madrid I found myself confused about the lack of bakery’s in my home city so this was a nice surprise. The choices were suitable artisan but I was here for lunch and not a loaf. I had a sandwich and a doughnut. My sandwich was a very soft roll filled with pastrami, sauerkraut, lettuce and smoked butter, the butter being the bit that reeled me in. The pastrami was nice and plentiful but I found the whole sandwich a little salty, personally(and this is just me) I would have doubled the amount of sauerkraut to help cut through the salt. It was nice but a wee bit disappointing at the same time. My raspberry doughnut was a whooper and was a pillow of delight although it was more than a tad stingy on the jam. Overall it was OK, I liked bits but conversely thought some bits could be better. Will pop in for a loaf next time I’m there to see if their bread game is up to scratch.

I like visiting this relatively new eatery and have been a number of times in recent weeks. The staff are always super friendly and chatty and I like that. I’ve sat in for breakfast with the Mr — eggs royale were perfectly cooked and a nice size portion — I’ve sat in for lunch with a friend — we both had pasta dishes and the Mac n cheese was a winner at £5.50, a generous and tasty portion. Yum. I have also had a fair few breakfast rolls, coffees and cakes to go. The do a good breakfast deal with coffee and a roll and I like that they toast the roll on the big hot plate, which gently warms it and makes it slightly crispy rather than out of a toaster crunchy. But it’s the cakes that keep me coming back. The choice is great and there seem to be new ones every time I visit! The doughnuts are well worth trying, today I had a Crème brûlée one. Oh my word!!! It was cake perfection. It was ridiculously messy to eat but I enjoyed every dripping mouthful. A lovely addition to the city centre and I’m looking forward to their Finnieston site opening soon :)

After seeing various Twitter pals rave about Seb & Mili I decided to check it out for myself when looking for shelter from the typical Glasgow rain. Upon entering I was a bit taken aback by the wave of tropical heat from the café, which normally would be a bit much, but with the current weather was very welcome. The interior was bright and clean whilst still feeling warm and welcoming, which is great for a venue below street level. I think I had just missed the lunch time rush when I visited as the shelves were looking a bit bare but there was still a decent selection. I opted for a cup of tea and a lemon chicken panini — after much deliberation as I was very tempted by the all day breakfast. The panini wasn’t much, but it was an alright lunch. I think I would have been better off with the breakfast after all! I did spy a tuna bagel on the shelf which could have been a nice alternative. The tea is from Cup and the morning brew was delicious as per usual! The waitress serving did seem a little uneasy, but she was really friendly and even gave me a couple of free macarons to take away after I’d enquired about them when paying. It’s a lovely little find and one I’ll definitely be returning to in the future — it would appear that there’s a substantial variety of baked treats for me to try! It’s great value for money, which is always welcome when similar establishments can be a total rip off.

I’m giving this place a 3 star because it’s quite nice, the space and all but to be perfectly honest, the food and drinks aren’t all that! The staff members are lovely though! The first time I tried Seb & Mili was with Queen B herself. We went over for some lunch and chit chat! I ordered from their brunch menu a plate of waffles and bacon, a combination that can’t go wrong. However, my plate weren’t as impressive as I’d hoped. The waffles themselves, though tasted fine, were SOSOSO thin! Aren’t waffles suppose to be fluffy and crunchy on the outside but chewy on the inside? And the bacon, well … I dunno … weren’t even crunchy? They were so pale, it was a tad questionable! I think Bri’s special dish of chicken and corn was probably much better than what I got! The second time I went, I brought my friend over for coffee. She made the mistake of ordering a soy latte because boy was it baaaaadddd! They’re obviously not the place to have a cuppa! They don’t know how to make proper coffee at all, and add the bad management of soy milk, yikes! Her soy milk was curdling so bad that it looked like tofu. There’s a certain method to making soy lattes/cappucinos, if you don’t know it, don’t serve it. Also, the coffee was burnt. Mine was as bitter as a car tyre. Added like 3 teaspoons of sugar to try and save it. Conclusion, don’t order coffee from here. They have homemade cakes though, which are pretty ok I guess. We tried the muffins and brownies! Muffins are pretty decent but brownies were far too sweet for my liking. Perhaps a super sweet tooth would love it? Again, the space is lovely! Green and very comfy. The staff members are sweethearts too! They kinda save it for me. But they really need to reevaluate what they’re serving their customers! The food can be so much better!

£8 and 20 minutes later, I left with an average cup of tomato soup and a poor excuse for a grilled cheese(burnt, hardly any cheese). There were lots of delicious looking cakes and treats, but unfortunately i would never purchase any of them — they’re all laid out uncovered on the deep counter separating the line and the queue — unless you prefer your baked goods drizzled in spit, probably best to avoid. I was excited for a new café/lunch spot opening so close to work, but sadly I probably won’t be returning or recommending to co-workers.

Now this is what I call a real classy café serving something new and different than the usual boring items that have been recently popping all over Glasgow. Here there is something for everyone from breakfast filled baps, eggs Benedict, hot filled deli sandwiched not forgetting the amazing freshly baked goods on offer. There are plenty of seats inside, I just ordered a coffee to go and descent coffee it was, I will definitely be coming here regularly. On my visit here it look rather quiet, but that maybe due to it being a new place, I’m sure it won’t take long In picking up.

Who doesn’t love a bakery? This place is actually more of a café with a nice seating area if you’re going to eat in. As I was just popping in for a quick visit, I just grabbed some baked goods to go. Today is their first day of opening and my gosh, they look like a very slick operation already. I’m not sure who is behind the business but they certainly know their stuff — the place looks amazing, the food is drool-worthy and the staff were all super friendly and chatty. I couldn’t resist the lure of a couple of donuts which are plain and sugar coated. I noticed some very delicious looking stuffed-brioche and got those two — plain, caramalised onion or feta and spinach filled. The total for two donuts and two brioche £10 which I thought was pretty pricey(and the only reason this is 4 rather than 5 star) — maybe they’ll be the best damn brioche I’ve ever eaten though so I might update this review in a couple of hours. [Edited: after I posted this, I got a message from the owner to say that I should have been charged around £7.50 so there must have been a mistake at the till. I really appreciated that, so have updated the score to the full 5 stars as it was so nice of them to get in touch about it! The donut and brioche were both absolutely delicious too, by the way.] They have an epic brunch menu which I’ll have to come back for — brioche French toast, eggs benny, pancakes, waffles. Everything is made fresh and they certainly know how to make you drool over the food. If you’re in for lunch, there’s sandwiches(made on baked in-house bread), hot dishes and salads. Seb & Mili are opening another store in the next couple of weeks in Finnieston, by Old Salty’s(the blue store currently being done up) — apparently that space is amazing, so I look forward to visiting there too.
