Back in the day, this gallery hosted travelling exhibitions and had a rather nice café. It is falling into disuse, relatively speaking: the last major use of the space was to hold the displaced exhibits into a sort of greatest hits package for The Kelvingrove, while that museum was being refurbished. For such a central location, it is woefully underused: the space is flexible and the chance of enticing the casual visitor into the world of art was huge. Like the CCA down the road, this building lacks the sort of comprehensive support that would allow it to take its place at the centre of Glasgow’s cultural life. Currently being looked after by the school of art, the story of its refurbishment in 1990 and subsequent lack of use is a sorry story, and I hope that it becomes a vibrant gallery again soon.
