Best chippy in the city centre. I’ve sat in before, but mainly use this for takeaway on the days when work is hectic and you just want some good old chips to, pun intended, take away the stress. The staff are fantastic. Usually I’ll ask for totally the wrong thing and they don’t even moan when I explain that I’ve asked for the wrong thing. Sometimes I trip over the furniture. I’ve always been a bit dyspraxic. My main thing is a sausage supper. It’s something I normally wouldn’t thank you for, but they do a good one. Chips are golden just how I like them. Not brown and mushy like some other places. And another thing I wouldn’t normally do — gravy on chips. However their gravy is great. I think I’ll be back Friday lunchtime. Looking forward to it just from writing this. And as for sitting in… Their Fish Tea is perfection.

Yet again. This place pretty much perfect again. Fish batter nice, fish moist with plenty flavour, chips had a little bite, but were still lovely and obviously freshly cut. The tartar sauce was terrible. Needs more than blended gherkins through it. Add some capers and seasoning. The tall beautiful woman with black hair and a tattoo was so polite and friendly. So she was the first I’ve tipped for a long time:) this place is a great place for tourists. I also never knew they sold steak and breakfast etc. Great visit again.

So it’s Halloween & I have to work into the wee hours of the morning. There’s only one way to make me feel better about it & that’s a takeaway fish supper. For this rare treat I went to McPhees as it’s round the corner from my work. I managed to time it perfectly — no queue & fish just going in the frier — so only had 5 mins to wait for the fish. You just get one fish with your supper but it is a large one and melted in the mouth. £5.50 isn’t horrendous for the city centre and it set me up for the night.

Jack McPhee’s fresh from the Seas. I have had several meals from this purveyor of fine Scottish Fried Foods. Finally took a collection of visitors to Scotland to this establishment. We had taken them to a large number of restaurants of Glasgow but for some reason they loved this place. Waitress at your table, fast service and food well prepared, It does deliver on all of the major points. Why these foreign idiots preferred this place to fine dining, I will not understand. Maybe because, it is more like Glasgow than the chandelier-filled dining halls or the sparkling glasses of the champagne bars. Plain tables, a bunch of chairs and a guy behind a fryer who knows how to prepare fish. Almost a Weegie Jiro — a master of the oil.

I have have dinned at jack mcphee’s on several occasions and found the the food to be first class, it’s always been busy when I’ve been in and there is something for everyone on the menu not just fish. They have a fish & chips meal deal where you can get your main meal, coffee, bread and butter for £5.95 I think or something very near that. Staff are friendly but hate asking them if l can go to the toilets as they are always locked. Good value food, and always fresh fish, if your looking for a place to take an elderly relative or aunt, this is the place to take them, they will be well impressed.

I used to be quite a regular at the old(now Mario’s Plaice or summat) Jack MacPhee’s on Byres Road years ago ~ they done a fab fish supper & also a good fried breakfast. I happened to be in town early(ish) on a Sunday morning & I had a real craving for a good old greasy-spoon type fry up! So bad but SO good :) I’ve noticed the sheer lack of really good greasy-spoon type cafes in Glasgow — I don’t get it really? I thought Glasgow/Scotland was supposed to be the unhealthy/fried food capital?! Having spent many(hungover) mornings in London & the surrounding areas I never struggled to find a brilliant greasy-spoon café; mega(cheap) fry ups,(chipped) huge mugs of tea all served with a snarl — love it! But in Glasgow there seems to be a lack of them… We were in the vicinity of Cowcaddens & I was trying to think of all the good fried breakfast-type joints in that area and I was racking my wee brain… it was a choice between here, slogging it up to Dopey Diner(never been there) or some random Weatherspoons. I chose Jack; it was closer & I was really hungry so I figured a Weatherspoons(sometimes diet sized) fried breakfast might not do the trick. It had not long open so we were the first ones in & I have knocked a star off for it being really cold! Fair enough they’ve just opened but still I was freezing. Brrr! Perused the menu & did a panic for a mo because it was ALL fish stuff *gulp* I was worried they’d stopped serving their breakfasts but then suddenly I spotted it! Yas. I tried to remember the price so I just looked at the menu online but our menu must’ve been different as there was only one choice of fried breakfast & it didn’t have the black pudding or hash browns :(Damn. It was still mighty fine. We had: 2 fried eggs, 2 rashers of bacon, potato scones, big(chip shop style) sausage, beans, toast & a mug or tea or coffee. My boy doesn’t like hot drinks so asked if he could substitute the tea/coffee for a can of fizzy drink(fair I thought) but the lady serving us said they didn’t do this so he’d have to order his can separately. I thought it was a bit off UNTIL she said ‘Well, you can have the other coffee or tea if you want then’ to me. Too right. The fried breakfast was very good — everything was cooked perfect & with a fried breakfast made outside your own home this can be a rare thing. The sausage was particularly tasty ~ a nice big(ooh-err!) chippy style sausage. Yums. I’m not sure if they have a different menu on a Sunday to the rest of the week but it would be nice to see a bit more variety of breakfast dishes ~ even a veggie fried breakfast option would be good but as I say, maybe there is a different weekday/Sat menu that includes this. All in all I was glad I came here & not Weatherspoons(again). It made a nice change & I can say I left here with a very full, happy belly :)

A nice little spot for a cheap eat when in central Glasgow. I ordered Fish and Chips. The Haddock was a very generous portion and the bed of fries were good themselves. The side of mashed peas had an odd base which made it murky and gave it an flavor that was not to appeasing to my taste buds. Overall, the dish was adequate and kept me on my way.

Cheap and cheerful as my Granny would say. Staff is friendly and food is good and inexpensive. Can’t beat a haddock and chips for 4.75!

Been meaning to go here for years and I’m sad to report that my first time had to be one of those late night drunken romps but alas, I was nonetheless impressed. Nae cheap, as expected, but the portion was substantial and the batter on the fish was really crisp and fresh and even 20 minutes later when I got home and thought I would sit on my bum and eat it, it was still crispy with no grease or anything anywhere to be found. My missus enjoyed her pizza which was reasonably priced and looked grand. Nice interior which I was surprised was still open to joe and josephine public so late at night. A good enough experience to make me want to go during the day for a seated experience.

Funky old booths dot this old joint. I really enjoyed the fish(haddock). Fresh and cooked to perfection. Chips were too chunky for my liking and the mushy peas were odd. Both needed a lot of salt. I will definitely go back on my next visit to Glasgow. Eclectic ambience. Delicious fish.

Brrrr it’s cold… need comfort food and a place to warm me cold wee digits afore the long bus ride back from town. Solution? Chips! Yes folks, coming all the way from a deep fat fryer to a wrapped up wee paper parcel, Scotland the nation, the belief, the myth and the legend brings you a packet of stodge that’ll keep your wee handies warm, your belly full and your heart wishing that you’d just eat some bloody greens once in a while! Jack Mcphee’s is one of these fried vegetable emporiums that seems to have been here for donkeys years… is it better than the rest? Eh… not sure. To be honest, eating chips when sober is never a good way to tell if the chips are amazing or not. These chips were(as the star rating so helpfully points out) A OK, nowt special, but certainly a good whack better than some joints i’ve been to… at least they serve proper chippy chips! Right then. JMc’s… good chips, surly service and raised heart rate… not bad at all!

Jack Mc Phee aren’t just a chip shop, they are a way of life. This place has been around for years and has a great reputation for delivering a good standard of food. You can get every kind of chip supper under the sun, and in the seating area you can order anything from a toastie to some delicious mac and cheese. They may be more expensive than what you’re used to from a chippy, but their food is scrummy and the service is great. As everyone else has outlined, the staff in here leave you to it, and don’t badger you to make speedy decisions before bundling you out the door. It’s fairly chilled out and a very cosy breakfast option during the cold winter months. Their café stays open well into the evening if you fancy getting some dinner. It’s a very homely place to get some food, a cup of tea and a natter. I ususally come here when I’m having a gossip with my mum and always find it comforting and relaxing. I’d recommend the sausage but make sure you have someone to share it with as portions are massive!

This is a very traditional Glasgow chippy. I’ve been in here many a time on the march through Sauchiehall Street after a couple of drinks. It’s located on Hope Street, just off the main pedestrian precinct. The food is brilliant and the batter is fantastic on the fish, chips, sausage, pizza, Mars bar(too far) — although it is Glasgow we’re talking about here — we’d deep fry lettuce given the chance. If I’m honest I’d say that the food in here tastes a bit better than what I’ve had in other Glasgow Chippies like several of the Blue Lagoons, however even this place has a bi of catching up to do until it gets to the level of the Kings Café(best chips and cheese in Glasgow!). If you’re going to Jacks, get the sausage supper, it’s fantastic.

My love for fish suppers is just one of the many reasons that I fear the next few years will see me transform from a rippling adonis into a wheezing, sweaty, disgusting blob, but when they taste so good, It’s a price I’m willing to pay. As good a sit-down chippy as you’ll find anywhere.

Jack McPhee’s is delicious! The fish here is excellent quality, cooked to perfection and ridiculously more-ish! One of my friends is an even bigger fan than I am so whenever we meet for lunch in town she insists that we go here, it doesn’t take much persuasion to get me to go along as the thought of a fish supper tea is very hard to resist. You can sit in or take-away but we usually sit in. The whole restaurant has a great atmosphere and there’s no pressure to eat as quick as you can you can sit here for hours and you won’t get any annoyed glances from the friendly staff as in some restaurants. I guess the chilled out vibe adds to its popularity. It isn’t the cheapest fish shop in the world but you pay for great quality fish and the chips are just as scrumptious.

Please note that this is a chippy — it’s slightly tourist-tastic, but please remember, it’s JUST a chippy. That may be slightly harsh — it’s a good chippy, don’t get me wrong — but does it really have to be so expensive? I mean, a portion of chips alone is expensive, but for fish suppers(or even any other suppers) it’s quite pricey — and for £5, I’d expect to be eating the best fish supper of my life. Which, sadly, I wasn’t(maybe it was something to do with the cardboard box?!). Saying that, I’m giving Jack McPhee’s an extra star, purely based on the company slogan(rhyme tastic): Jack Mc Phee, fresh from the sea. It makes me laugh, everytime, without fail.

Any fish and chips fan will love this place where you can choose between haddock, cod, salmon, and sole to name a few. You may select having the fish fried in their crispy batter or pan fried in olive oil and lemon as well as choosing between mushy or garden peas. We chose one of each of these options and preferred the olive oil preparation and the non-rolling peas the most. These fish and chips were easily some of the best we had in our time in the UK! Bonus points for the amazing scones served here too.

Freshly made fish and chips and the smell wafts out onto the street tempting you in. Has take away and sit in areas. Good lunch time offers, although the take away section is very small and queues spill out onto the street.
