This will be short and sweet, the Roll with square and Tottie scone doubler for £1.50 is an absolute bargain and the stuff of local legend. The tottie scones are sensational, thick as a door wedge. The hangover food of the gods!

The best baked goods are made by hand and it’s even better when they’re made lovingly and locally. This place is the real deal and there’s something reassuring about imperfect icing and squashed scones. Maybe it’s because it reminds me of Glasgow grannies and bake sales. Maybe it’s because I love the local feel of the place. Maybe it’s because I enjoy the bakery banter of builders and buggies, as Glaswegians gather to gab and grab some comforting stodge. Whatever the reason, I love this wee bakery and it’s one of the few you’ll find that haven’t been bought over by the big bad bakers of the high street. Shop locally, eat heartily and gab happily.

It was the Sunday morning after a blurry Saturday night. I woke not quite hungover, but not quite right. The only thing so cure me was a totty scone roll. I dragged Stu out of his festering pit and we made our way to Grant’s the Bakers. I had passed it several times while sprinting for the train and the smell emanating from the bakery almost caused me to forget all about the train and go and live in there. Hot rolls and hot drinks are available to take away at very reasonable prices. At 10.30 on a Sunday, the queue was out the door and spilling untidily onto the street. Builders, locals and hungover tramps waited patiently in front of the cake filled counter and sizzling hotplate of over-processed meats. The smell was fantastic. Thanks to the two wee wummin behind the counter the queue moved quickly. We bought 6 totty scones and hastened home to fry them! They were big, misshapen and had an almost meaty bite to them. This makes them high up there in my Totty Scone Hall of Fame. Yes, I do actually have a Totty Scone Hall of Fame. I am rather a freak, I do fear. Next time I think I’ll go for an iced donut.
