This is one cool project. Gorbals Recycles not only has a shop in Gorbals but on the Saltmarket and in Partick, which I feel I’ll just need to Unilocal about separately. The shop in Commercial Road at the moment is just called Number Ten or known as Dan Flynn’s Bike Shop, they’re open to ideas for a new name. This shop is a more than just bike shop, they except second hand bikes which they can repair, take parts from and build better bikes. The talent from the guys working here are brilliant, they have their own workshop where they build and repair the bikes. They also offer free repairs for kids and a subsidised price for adults. They have an amazing amount of bikes in storage that people have donated to them but I think they get more than they can recondition. They have everything you need for cycling, if you’re doing any repair work yourself or need any safety gear. The bikes range from about £70 upwards. They’ve even got some amazing Flying Scotsmans, I know one isn’t for sale as the technician is pretty proud of his handy work and it is a lovely bike. It is a bit out the way and dwarfed by the new Gorbals Leisure Centre. The easiest way to get to it is by a lovely walk or cycle through Glasgow Green. It’s a 5 – 10 minute walk from the Saltmarket or from the People’s Palace. It’s not just a shop but an organisation that supports volunteers and people who are unemployed trying to get back into work. It also aims to prevent more land fill by plenty of recycling not only bikes but other goods based in their other shops. Next time you think bikes think Gorbals Recycles.
