What a beautiful building. I’ve been in the larger galls upstairs but today we were in the dining room. The building is steeped in University history and I loved nosing about. As for the student union, sticky floors and stale alcohol smells… took me back to my uni days.

Updating my review just to say that the café is a decent place to get some work done in the day time!

In my clubbing and gigging days the QMU was much more likely to host an event I wanted to attend and so I had not been to the GUU before. V and I went with friends to the Glasgow Little League club night(a sort of spotty sibling offspring of the much missed National Pop League) upstairs at the GUU and a top quality night was had by all. The venue was perfect with plenty of seats for us oldies but a more than large enough dance floor for when the mood took us. The bar across the floor was cheap if a little light on choice(this is a student union after all) but it was nevertheless disappointing that it ran out of red wine before the evening was at an end. A fascinating building with much history and a wide range of different rooms — there was a ceilidh going on elsewhere at the same time — it is well work a visit. Stay on the beers and wine(both dirt cheap) and avoid the whisky(exorbitant).

As far as student’s unions go, this one is actually pretty good in terms of facilities. It has all the usual characteristics — a few cheap cheap bars and eateries — as well as a shop, ATM and… a Subway! My friends from other universities were always jealous of that Subway. It was far too handy for me and my fast-food cravings. I spent much of my time at Glasgow uni here — during the day at least. The ‘reading room’ is perfect for a relaxing cup of coffee on those huge couches or a chat with friends. At night time though it was somewhere I tended to avoid — not so much due to the tackiness of being a student’s union but the often arrogant rugby guys and friends who ruined the fun atmosphere. The building itself, like much of Glasgow University, is stunning to look at.
