I have visited several exhibitions here over the years, and I enjoy browsing the artwork. Currently there are two main exhibitions on, one is by Liz Muir and is mainly on Glasgow architecture with linoprints of familiar –and not so familiar– landmarks. Downstairs there is also work by Alisdair Gray(who did the mural at Hillhead subway, among many other things) and prints for sale from well known artists like John Byrne and Ken Currie. Upstairs is a huge gallery space which is bright and spacious, and offers interesting people watching opportunities from the large windows as well as the artwork to see! The current exhibition is by Fiona Watson and has some beautiful works along nature themed lines, I had not heard of her work before but spent a happy quiet time browsing the work. The exhibition was well set up as it had a small space dedicated to how she produces her work with sketchbook images, inspirational objects and etching plates– a lovely touch. A new initiative has been introduced which is designed to encourage you to explore the galleries of Glasgow by downloading an app and scanning certain pictures in each gallery– it brings them to life! I had not seen this before, so need to go back and try it. It is called ActivCanvas and you can find this at
I always feel comfortable in the Glasgow Print Studio, I am often a little scared to go in commercial gallery spaces as I don’t have lots of spare cash for buying artwork. Here the gallery spaces are large, bright and welcoming, with no obligation to buy, and hugely knowledgeable staff should you have any questions. If you really really like any of the artwork, you can also buy through the ‘Own Art’ scheme which allows special rate loans for buying art through a Creative Scotland/Arts Council England scheme. Don’t be scared… go and see!

The Glasgow Print Studio is a charitable organization which aims to aid and encourage people to be involved in the art of printmaking. They do this buy offering print services and educational courses to artists and the general public. The services on offer include facilities for etching and engraving on metals or wood, screen-printing, computers and printers of digital imaging and the invaluable advice of profession printmakers with an abundance of experience. You need to join the gallery as a member to use the facilities and pay an annual membership but it is worth it if you are serious about printed art. The Glasgow Print Studio also exhibits some really interesting work and is currently taking part in the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art. There is also a fantastic range of artwork of sale which is very varied and the friendly staff are always happy to help and can organise any framing you may need.
