Now i’m not sure if the gals gear falls into the same category in this place, but the guys stuff reeks of middle aged man trying to look like a scruffy outdoorsy younger guy, but ends up looking distinctly like a middle aged man trying to look like a scruffy, outdoorsy… you get the point. I was recently loured into this joint by the 40% off sale, in the vain hope of picking up a pair of jeans or other leg coverings. I tried one pair on and decided that the old man look was not for me, yet, and left asap. Not only is it old man gear in here, but its a tad pricey for what is essentially up market ASDA George gear… and to whoever said that this place sold good skater gear?!? I reckon there may be a chance that you’ve never once set foot inside this joint, or that you live next to a old persons skate park. Nice enough gear but just not my style, yet.

Proprietors of four star outdoor clothing at three star prices, this particular branch of Fat Face drops a half star on account of its size. Despite its prime location in the centre of Byres Road, there is a limited choice in here and a browse will take little over two minutes out of your day. In saying that, the staff are friendly and there’s no denying the range of stock is well-made and well-designed. As others have said, it leans more towards the trendy than practical, so tends to be frequented more by hipsters than rock climbers.

Fat Face is an outdoor clothing shop for people who don’t really go outdoors. It’s more of a trend thing, rather than their clothing having the capability of keeping you extra warm or dry from the rain. The clientele is a strange mix– young ‘skater/surfer’ types, to the older generation; my aunt regularly shops here. Don’t get me wrong, most of the clothes are nice and of good quality plus my aunt is a pretty trendy lady, but my cynicism comes from their ridiculous prices. I have on occasion walked past their window display and seen something that takes my fancy, but I refuse to go in because of how over-priced it is.

I’m not really an outdoors-y type person — I grew up in the country, so I’d like to think I’m not some creton who can’t appreciate a good fleece, but that doesn’t mean you’ll find me parading through Kelvingrove wearing a rucksack, with a compass in one hand and a walking stick in the other, talking about the topography of the present landscape(«mostly grass, with the odd can of irn bru. Tretcherous!»). When you walk into Fat Face you are immediately greeted with their ‘survival’ stock(do necklaces really count… really!?). You’ve got to give it to them though, for such a small store they have actually packed it full of stuff. Women’s clothing, men’s clothing, kid’s clothing, boots, ‘survival’ kits, accessories… ooft. It has it all. The clothes aren’t AMAZING or the height of fashion — they’d do the job — but they aren’t exactly my cup of tea(especially when they come at quite a high price). Like most places on Byres road, everything comes at a price. I once bought a thermos mug for my sister, which cost me, £23 no less. And no, it didn’t make the coffee for you either. Troubling, isn’t it? I’m slightly skeptical — it is nice for a one off gift every now and again — maybe it’s worth a look if you need outdoors type clothes, and have lots of pennies to spend? I don’t know, but it doesn’t really cater for me, I’m afraid.
