Exhibition Centre Railway Station

In this small corner of Glasgow, this railway station is pretty much your only option for public transport, unless you want to travel back to Argyle Street or pay silly pounds for a taxi.
For that reason, it’s pretty good. The station itself doesn’t have much in the way of amenities. With only an outdoor seating area and its plain appearance, it may seem pretty barren and secluded.
But on most days and evenings it’s actually quite busy, with the people commuting from the SECC to town using it as a necessity. The train service is fairly regular, and the pedestrian tunnel link to the SECC and Armadillo venue takes you over the Clydeside Expressway in under five minutes.
Trains run from early in the morning till nearly midnight, keeping you connected in a motorway-​filled area of Glasgow that can get quite isolated otherwise. It’s also the nearest public transport link for the Crowne Plaza Hotel and, believe it or not, the Science Centre and BBC! They too are fairly secluded, with passengers having to venture well into Cessnock or Govan to get a bus. If you don’t fancy going that distance just to go back in your tracks, the SECC train link offers a direct link to Partick and Central Station where you can then get to wherever you need to go with more ease.

Ever useful when you’re attending a show or an exhibition at the SECC is the SECC’s own low level railway station. It’s quite a small station, but it still connects with a large majority of the low level stations across Glasgow which means that it is by far the best way to reach the SECC.
Though don’t let the bumf on either the SECC’s website or the SPT’s website convince you; this station is not right on the SECC’s doorstep.
Instead it’s across the river and connected by a large, long and slightly bizarre covered walkway. It’s a five/​ten minute walk from the station to the SECC entrance — which is, incidentally, long enough for you to start feeling really sick due to the aforementioned bizarre covering of the walkway. Trust me on this one.

The Exhibition Centre Railway Station is pretty non descript; two platforms, one ticket office, freezing cold shelter. However, it is beside one of the most iconic structures in Glasgow; the red tunnel that connects the station to the Exhibition Centre.
When there is a huge concert on, the tunnel becomes packed with revellers and touts selling posters and t shirts. Most of the time it is occupied by people using it as a shortcut or cyclists zipping round the corners.
At sunset, you can get some incredible views of the Clyde Auditorium, the Science Centre and the River from the tunnel.

Ludicrously small station for the numbers that use it, Exhibition Centre generally serves those who are heading to a concert or show at the SECC. While it’s fine for all day events, it can be massively over-​crowded for late night shows.
As others have noted, the most appealling feature is the ultra kitsch red tunnel which leads from the station to the venue. It’s not going to pick up any design awards, but it remains an iconic Glaswegian landmark and a nostalgic nod towards the optimistic 80s.

A handy wee train station for, as the name suggets, making your way to the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, or SECC.
It’s the closest rail link for the SECC and Clyde Auditorium (also known as the Armadillo). It’s also very handy for making your way across the river to the Science Centre, tower, and IMAX.
Although it’s only one or two stops on the low-​level track from Central, it’s far enough to give you a good excuse not to walk (well, that’s why I always use it!). Trains run from here out to Milngavie, Dalmuir, Motherwell, etc, where you can transfer onto the lines to Drumgelloch, Springburn, Helensburgh and Balloch along the way.

When I was a little brat, I used to often visit the SECC with my family, usually twice a year to see the Motor Show and the Ideal Homes Exhibition. I used to find such events unbelievably exciting at aged 6, though nowadays I really couldn’t be bothered traipsing round the halls looking at cheap Korean cars or a cardboard mock up of a flatpack Wimpy home.
Anyway, perhaps the most exciting thing was the massive red tunnel that leads from this station to the SECC, it doesn’t feel as space age as it did then, but it still brings back the memories.

Exhibition Centre station lies on the Argyle Line of the Glasgow low level network. It is served by trains from Milngavie and Dalmuir to the west, and Motherwell and Larkhall to the south.
I remember the station as it was back in the early ‘90s when it used to be named Finnieston, as it lies within this area of town. It was sensibly re-​named Exhibition Centre so that passengers know to alight here for the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC), which is reached via a tunnel over the Clydeside Expressway road in little over five minutes, making it very handy for this purpose.
I have used this station several times to reach the SECC for gigs. Luckily there is still trains running both ways until just before midnight, meaning that when a gig finishes (usually just after 11) there is still plenty time to grab a train. Trains pass through in both directions roughly every 10 minutes, even at night, so it is a great service. A ticket office is also located inside the station building.
