I was impressed with Don Cazcabel, and it appears I got my wish that a similar place to ‘The Basement’ in Broughton Street in Edinburgh would be in Glasgow!( ). It is a Mexican themed bar and quite a transformation from the old Samuel Dows(which I visited only occasionally, but remember what it looked like). Open up the swing door to find a dark interior with blacked out windows, sawdust on the floor and candles on the table… sounds scary but it is really not, the staff are friendly and welcoming and happy to chat and you can take your pick of seating at tables or at the bar(or stand). They have a lager(can’t remember which) and McLachlans ale on tap, as well as a big range of bottled beers –all not your usual selection as they have kept to their theme. We tried a ‘Day of the Dead’ porter, which was only £3 a bottle. Rich, smoky and dark(almost coffee like). They have a great range of tequila and mezcal, and do tasters with pallet cleansers too, as well as a margarita mix which was churning away colourfully on the bar. The nachos were beautifully spiced with a tangy and tasty salsa– if this is an indication of the quality of their cuisine I am impressed. I look forward to trying their £6 mains– they have pork carnitas, beef de la casa or vegetarian options, as well as churros for £3.50. 5 stars as it is a quirky and fun popup, in one of my favourite cuisine types, with reasonable prices and unusual drinks to try. I know I will make it a regular haunt whilst it is there!
