A hole was filled. The chippie, like punk and football is a British delight. Don’t try to argue that the sausage is top quality, coz you’d lose. Fat is generally the second most prevalent ingredient, closely followed by salt and thus we know it’s bad for us. Or at least we should. So why with such low expectations is this place just average? It’s a panelled and melamine deal inside and your elbows won’t stick to the tables. The staff are ‘spit and sawdust’ friendly, but nothing special and the £7.95 sit-in fish tea wasn’t as plump and crisp as I’d have liked. It was a bit short on quantity too, which is very unlike most fish teas I’ve had. If you were passing and fancied a chippy then I wouldn’t dissuade you, but quite frankly a hole would be filled and that’s about it. :-\

T’was home time from pubular and chips were demanded by the lady of the house. I asked the one they call ‘Wiggles’ where best to purchase said deep fried potato snackery in the area that is the Merchant City. He advised this joint. I stumbled forth to this place hoping that real chippy chips were awaiting and boy was I not disappointed! For 2 and a half of your earth pounds I was shoveled out a meaty potion of chipped tatties. Fresh(ish) flavorsome, hot and tasty. Sold. I shall return!

Right, okay. I know the best time to review a place is probably not at pub closing hours and half cut on Tennents, but the munch I got in Da vinci’s was brilliant. I can honestly say that the fish, chips and mushy peas were outstanding. The pizza on the other hand was, well, a bit disappointing. I mean, they aren’t terrible or anything, just not that special. When you can buy fancy stone baked pizzas all across the city now, you expect a little more for your money. The staff were friendly and on top form considering the amount of sloppy and obnoxious drunks in at that time of night. A nice smile and a bit of homely banter before you head off to bed is a good way to settle on the night.

Da Vinci’s is a good all rounder, situated in the heart of Glasgow, serving up the expected chip shop offerings, as well as good old fashioned home cooking. The food is simple and effective, offering classics such as fish and chips, lasagne and macaroni cheese, which are delicious and reasonably priced for a city centre café. It’s not uncommon for old dears so take a wander in here by themselves for some fish and chips, bread and butter, and a cup of tea, to while away the day chatting to the friendly staff and having a read at one of the newspapers kindly provided. There is also a great selection of pizza and pasta available, as well as generous helpings of chippy chips that are absolutely delicious and perfect for a party pit-stop through town.

I have spent many a day in the Queen Street area and I often wondered if I could justify having a pizza for my lunch. Da Vinci’s is a take-way Pizza restaurant that looks good so I thought this would be a great place to indulge. One day I decided that I had worked sufficiently hard enough to justify this most lavish of lunch time purchases and I have to say that it was a great decision and I have not looked back since. The portions you get are massive and the pizza tasted fresh. As a vegetarian pizza is always a safe bet and I was impressed with the middle selection of food. I have been back once since that gluttonous day and again the pizza was tasty and the cost reasonable. Check it out if you feel like you need a big, cheesy wrapped treat!

Da vinci’s is basically a chip shop with a café in it. Located on Queen Street, its basically open almost 24/7, attracting customers from the surrounding pubs and clubs. Many a night I have bounced round to Da Vincis, before phoning my taxi, to have chips, cheese and gravy(my friend introduced to me this culinary delight). Its always queued out around 4am as thats when most clubs shut, but try and get there a wee bit earlier and you can get a table. Although the customers at that time of day are generally drunk, I have only ever seen trouble once in the 8 or so years I have been visiting, and even then the staff dealt with it really well. A must visit if on a night out! I have also visited during the day for my lunch — Recommended are the pizza slices, macaroni or steak pie!
