Really nice pub grub, friendly staff. And proper chips. Good selection of draft ales, reasonable prices. I would recommend the posh fish fingers sandwiches!

There was a sign up somewhere here that said ‘New Friends always welcome’ and that really did seem to be their attitude. The friendly barmaid(who was incidentally gorgeous) asked everyone questions about their day or about themselves. Interesting food menu. I went for a tasty lasagne, washed down with a tasty Exmoor wild cat. They had a good selection of ales. There is a rumoured haunting at Christmas where a young Victorian girl holding a rag doll appears, smiles and then fades away.

It’s been ruined. Used to be a proper pub now it’s tourist re-fuelling stop.

An old styled pub serving real ales. It’s overlooking the quay, with outside seating it can be a real pleasure to sit and have a drink. They also do food in here not sure what that is like as i have never had anything.

The Prospect Inn is a very old and historic pub on Exeter’s quay. So what on Earth possessed the owners, making them gut the place and turn it into yet another single barred, faceless, featureless, boring clone pub with no character whatsoever? Don’t bother.

The Prospect Inn has a fantastic location, right on Exeter’s Quayside overlooking the river. The Quay can be bustling especially in the summer when there may be live music or food fairs in the open air, but more often you’ll find swans and canoeists as your view. The Prospect has plenty of tables outside, some across the road closer to the water too, so it is an ideal place for a summer drink or meal, but has cosy seating indoors too. Eating here, I’ve been impressed with the food, which is basic pub fare but well produced and presented, and reasonably priced too.

The Prospect is located down on the quay, which is an advantage due to the picturesque location, but also a disadvantage on weekend nights when it’s mostly populated by drunk, loud students and younger people. The Prospect is a bit of a safe haven, with its more relaxed atmosphere and interesting design. It’s worth visiting when live music is on, as the pub lends itself to it and it offers you something a bit different. A decent selection of ales as well.

As a tourist place to visit, Exeter’s Quayside is certainly a quieter and more selective place than the bustle around the Cathedral or the Retail Overkill of the new Princesshay shopping centre. There are several arts and crafts shops worthy of a visit, plus a museum, and the River Exe itself. There are also other bars there, of the more Yuppy variety. However, The Prospect Inn has its own quiet excellence. The dining area overlooks the Quay from several first floor windows, and there is also an alfresco area outside which is a joy to use in summer. The Prospect has a number of real ales and good wines to choose from, as well as an extensive and classy menu. The staff could not be more helpful, and if the food isn’t cheap, it certainly more than makes up in quality!

The quay is a great place to while away a few hours — if you can cope with the steep walk down from town. They serve up real ales and hearty food. Its definitely a local secret. There are even some seats outside for you to lap up the sunshine and watch the world paddle/cycle/wander past.
