I looove me some karaōke, and no team xmas outing in Edinburgh is complete unless we end up here. It’s usually myself and another guy on the team who lead the charge here just as people start to flag at the pub, and last week we struck it lucky by calling ahead on the day and booking their large room for up to 16 people for 2 hours. There isn’t too much to ask from a karaōke place other than a decent karaōke machine and sound-proofing(especially if you’ve heard us before) but this place had some very good extra touches anyway — my fave and most appreciated being the ‘Push for Service’ button by the door, which prompts one of the staff to brave the cat-strangling noises that abounded because someone put on some festive Mariah, and gingerly poke their head around the door so that we could signal for another bucket of beers. The room was a good size with all-important coat hooks too, and the mikes etc were easy to operate. My biggest annoyance though is the search function for songs or artists — you can’t search for individual words, it has to be exactly as the name begins. For example, typing in ‘Fugees’ gets you zero entries — you have to type in ‘The Fugees’. Similarly you can’t find a song with ‘Slim Shady’, you have to start typing ‘The Real Slim Shady’. This means a lot of people were disappointed when their song wasn’t found, but no doubt they just hadn’t started typing it exactly as it was in the system. There isn’t an apostrophe on the keypad either, so songs like ‘You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling’ required scrolling through over a hundred songs that started with ‘You’. I definitely recommend coming here with a big group to get value for money(and back-up singers obvs). As predicted not even two hours were enough and we ended up adding extra time after ‘Three Lions ‘98′ was cut off acrimoniously halfway through. I did manage to find more than enough songs to fill the time, and they have a folder of song lists to flick through for inspiration too. But I really think they’re missing a trick on that search function and it’d be five stars for me if that was better. It probably bugs me more as I’m usually the person queuing up the most songs whilst everyone else feigns shyness(then gets involved after a couple of beers). No doubt we’ll see you next year regardless!

Been here twice now. The first time it was a bit of a blur and only an hour or so(I think), but I do know I enjoyed it so much that when offered to go again I eagerly said«YESPLEASE!». We booked a room for 6 – 8 people, however we got handed a smaller room that originally booked. This was compensated by an additional 30 min of karaōke-ing by the Sugarcube Staff. What can I say. * Pick a song * Follow & Sing the lyrics on the screen (to the best of your belting abilities and volume) * Drink your beer(or cocktail) * Repeat The rooms are as soundproof as they possibly could’ve make them, but you will hear the rooms beside you between silences of your play list. You press a button to order your drinks, so you will not be missing a beat, verse or chorus I wondered why the walls and floors remind me of the vinyl cladding surrounds found in hospitals. I guess it was for sound proofing, but it swiftly became apparent it was(also?) for practical reasons. As one of the other room’s ‘high spirited’ occupants produced quite a bit more than false vocals. in the hallway. on the floor and the walls. This was swiftly reacted upon with a mop, bucket and air freshener and expertly cleaned up by the staff, not unlike what you’d see in any hospital A&E department. This was a great couple of hours of fun and recommended even for shy people. NOTE: be careful on the steps!

We’ve been to the Supercube quite a lot of times in the past 3years or so, and it simply turned into our favorite past-pub activity on weekends and even weekdays. Went back last Saturday on the occasion of a birthday with a large crowd, and even though we just walked in without prior reservation everything got set up quickly and we had a fantastic night — yet again. As for the price range for the rooms, I found that most if not all of the times we went there we were able to get a very fair and decent deal(we’re almost always 8 – 12 people). Prices for drinks are appropriate I’d say.

If you love karaōke you’ll love supercube! It’s great that you can be in a private group, drink copious amounts of booze and don’t feel like you’re making a fool of yourself in public! It’s slightly pricey but good if there’s a ton of you as the cost is split. The only thing that’s slightly irritating is the paper song books. You’d think they’d have an electronic search facility or something. However, they don’t have lots of competition in the area and its ideally situated on George st so it’s all cool. I recommend for birthdays — a good post meal, pre club giggle.

Recently a small bunch of Unilocalers rocked the mic at Supercube. Super fun can be had at Supercube which caters for karaōke groups in various sizes — pre-booked or walk-ins. Great service from the start introduces you to how it all works. With an extensive song list menu you will never be stuck for choice and this is available for viewing on their website too! Comfortable, sizeable rooms come with basic seating, a gigantic screen filling an entire wall(much better than a wee tv screen) and room service via a button on the wall to provide for your eating and drinking needs from the menu. During pauses between songs, nearby rooms could be heard belting out their lungs/murdering songs. The only downside was that the room was quite expensive and on paying bills at the end before leaving we merged with another large group in the small reception area who had come out at the same time so there was quite a delay in getting payments done and dusted. Never the less, I’m sure I’ll be back, but with a larger group to justify the cost of the room.

Baby one more time… or maybe not! From the outside the place looks really small. You walk down the steps and are greeted by the receptionist for that night. They inform you of how the place works and guide you to your booked room. I heard that the rooms are not cheap and the one we used was around £140, which potentially should hold more than 14 people. In all fairness, I don’t think that there was space for so many people. We were able to sit down on one long couch with a massive screen closely infront of us from which we could read the song lyrics. Maybe a bit too close?!? There was a computer on the left of the screen where you could choose your music from — by song title, catalogue number, artist(male/female/groups). You also got three massive heavy catalogues, with lots of choice. The evening was a blast. We had two amazing singers in our group, who sung a slow song together and sounded amazing. Alex also surprised us with her own fab performance of Heathcliff, and Susan with her cowboy song(cant remember the title so :-)) For us normal people we mastered our talents in our own way and chose well known lyrics from Madonna, B Tyler, Alice Cooper, Queen… How you got supplies? You rung a bell and the waitress came, took your order, and returned quickly to the booth with food and drinks. All in all its a fab night out and recommendable. Shame it’s not cheap!
