When I finally found the Square Centre Café, after walking down many corridors and through endless sets of double doors in the institutional Methodist Church building on Nicolson Square, everybody inside looked very surprised to see me. It was as if they couldn’t believe that anybody under the age of 60 could have either the ability or the inclination to make it down there. It’s easy to see why. With its sterile atmosphere and school-dinner odour, the Square Café is hardly a hip lunch destination. The food they offer is very, shall we say, traditional, consisting of cafeteria-style meat and potatoes, tea and coffee, or bland, watery soup, which is what I tried, and practically had to force down. However, their promise of «reasonable prices» is no lie — it’s dirt cheap, and perhaps might suit you if you’re an unadventurous eater whose tastebuds feel overwhelmed by the wealth of more multicultural lunch options nearby.
