The Reverie is the pub formerly known as ‘The Wine Glass’. It is located on a corner site in Newington just along the road from The Abbey in Edinburgh’s southside. I sometimes nip in here for a quick pint because it is right next to my bus stop. From the outside you will notice the large windows which often seem to be steamed up in the evenings! The décor is average and unremarkable, and there is a variety of different furniture ranging from easy chairs to small tables with upright seats and sofas. There is quite a large gantry at the bar, and a couple of real ales are available. I found the bar prices to be somewhat high for a suburban location. Food is available. The Reverie appears to specialise in entertainment! I have witnessed folk bands, jazz bands and a quiz night. The entertainment gives the pub a lively atmosphere and certainly appears to be appreciated by the patrons.

Reverie, for me, is at a junction where I am always passing by, and never stop. However, with the Silent Reviewer going for his once a year paid-up haircut a couple of stops down, we fell into Reverie for a spot of lunch. I have to admit, it ticks a lot of boxes for me — firstly, CHOICES for a vegetarian — always a winner, and rarer than I would(selfishly) like, although our window seat was on a tad chilly side. I settled on the vegetarian platter. Now, it didn’t ‘say’ it was for two but it definitely feeds two. The SR had a chicken quesadilla and fries, and waded in for moral support to help me finish off my garagantuan plate of vegetable goodness. Apart from the majority of the dish being soaked in olive oil(and if you don’t have enough, there is a bowl of oil and balsamic — too much for me), it was a spectacular win as far as I was concerned. Delicious houmus, olive tapenade, artichokes(in oil), chargrilled(very cold) vegetables, beetroot(non pickled), soft mozzzarella, lined up with a huge amount of pitta bread. For me, it was sunshine on a plate, and those are the best kinds of food to eat, ever. Total surprise, and definitely one to stop for in the future.

Popped into Reverie for a pre-dinner drink. I had the Liefmans Fruitesse Strawberry beer which was delicious. They have a good selection of beers, but you can get wine and cocktails here too if you so prefer. They serve food as well — there was a notice on the wall about ‘Sunday roast will all trimmings’ for only £10.95. I enjoyed my first visit to Reverie, the staff were friendly and I think I should spend more time in the Newington area as there are lots of nice pubs and restaurants to discover.
