Reid Concert Hall Museum of Instruments

Inadequately presented yet intriguing collection of all kinds of musical instruments: stringed, plucked, winds and percussion.
This is another small museum that is part of Edinburgh University. And, like the St. Cecilia’s Hall Museum of Instruments, the presentation is woefully inadequate considering the quality and the variety of the exhibit itself. Only more so.
First off, the museum is open to the public on two days only, and just for a few hours each: Saturdays 10:00 — 13:00 and Wednesdays 15:00 — 17:00. Secondly, it is not really in the city center proper, but of course in the age of Google Maps that’s no longer a problem.
Just be prepared to visit rooms that are small and dingy, with cramped cabinets that will remind the visitor of biological study exhibits at your local school — if you happened to have attended school in the 1890s. The cabinets indeed date back to the 19^th century. Which is a shame, as many of the exhibits are actually intriguing. None more so than an impressive collection of 19^th century saxophones and related wind instruments from the Adolphe Sax company.
The string instruments exhibit is far less distinguished and does not include ANY famous historic violins e.g. — I should know, selling stringed instruments is my business. But there are certainly some fascinating curios!
So, this place is for connaisseurs only. Specialists. Otherwise, don’t bother.
