Eh. I would stop there but that would be ‘shorter than normal reviews.’ The staff are great, and they get 3 stars. The food is edible, but not cheap enough to justify eating there and dealing with it. We had eggs benedict and it wasn’t nice– the hollandaise sauce was weird, the muffins were cheap, and I picked mostly fat from the bacon and got one bite of actual bacon. Not worth it.

Loved this place! Friendly staff, reasonable prices and tasty food. I tried the bean burger and it was filling and delicious! Would definitely go back.

I came to mums after reading that they had some affordable local comfort food. And I will say that the food was affordable. The portions were decent and the staff were all super cool and friendly. They were quick to offer recommendations and open to chat. I think that they’re definitely the saving grace of the establishment. That and the campy, oldies music. The food was filling, certainly, but somewhat lacking in flavor. The steak and ale pie was slightly bland. I might return for a light lunch to try something else on the menu, but my dinner wasn’t convincing.

Not bad, really not… but also not in my book something to call ‘amazing’… Maybe I am spoiled but I like to think I just love my eggs benedict… and have had many all around the globe! It’s my to-go-to breakfast as I find it hard to make it myself at home. Maybe I am comparing it too much to the real american diners, but even the ones I had in Costa Rica were lots yummier… The hollandaise sauce had a but too much sour flavour in it, not sure if its lemon or… it just didn’t taste balanced. Waitress was very friendly and patient with my mum(whom I HAD to take to a place with her name, right?) who speaks only a few words of English. I was lucky to be there at a calm moment, we were the one of the 3 parties in. But really nothing amazing or not a place I would want to go back to as soon as possible…

Good food, but I was expecting a bit more. We were looking for something cosy and tasty as it was very cold and we’ve been whole day outside. We went for a mash with sausage and gravy, and macaroni cheese. Coke was tasting like water and food were bit bland and tasteless. Overall good atmosphere, really nice staff and funky toilets but I wouldn’t be happy if my mum cooks like that.

The pies here are amazing! The chicken and venison pie are a couple of favorites. It’s a bit in the more expensive side but you’re going to be more than full. Occasionally they hold a great £7 lunch deal. I always recommend Mum’s to anyone visiting Scotland or the Uk in general. This place really shows how to do good British comfort food. The downside would be the breakfasts. They have really good breakfast but it’s expensive and the portions are small. I was disappointed with the pancakes and eggs Benedict. However, their veggies is big and a not so bad deal. Come here for lunch or dinner but maybe not for breakfast.

Mum’s, simply awesome. It does what it says in the tin! Lovely, warming home made comfort food, a treasure in such a cosmopolitan city. Food produced exactly as I remember from home, just like my mam used to make. Highly recommended and reasonable prices…

Not sure what all the fuss is about… maybe we came on an off day. This place had so much potential to be good. Great music, great service, but cold food… Nobody wants to come in from the gloom to eat cold eggs. :(

This place is not going to win any culinary awards. It’s basic comfort food. And they 5 star nailed it on comfort food. What more can you ask for than a place that does what it sets out to do, doing it to perfection. If you want a fancy breakfast or a lot of options, look elsewhere. If you want a great diner vibe with personality(love the wall art and door posters on the restroom), great service that feels like home and makes you laugh, and the fattiest stack of no frills, straight up buttery syrupy bacon-y goodness that a stack of bacon pancakes could possibly muster… Look no further. Best no frills, diner style comfort food I’ve had in a long time.

Choosing an item that you want to eat on the menu at Mums is like lining all of your children up and having to tell them which one your favorite is. Don’t worry wee ones, I love all of you. Mums has a selection that can’t be beat. I finally decided on the venison and redcurrant pie and my girlfriend had chicken rosemary pie(both delicious). We are aching to return to try the unbelievable selection of different sausage and mash plates, burgers, and puddings. Not to mention everything is under £10 — perfect for poor Americans who spent all their savings to move here. The drinks all sounded amazing too(Irn Bru floats, for real) and went for around £3−4. The service was excellent and our waitress was wonderful. She was funny, friendly, and so helpful. She explained things on the menu that we didn’t understand without so much as an eye roll. You guys call zucchini«courgette»? What? Anyways. The atmosphere was simple and a little cooky at times. Classic rock was the soundtrack to our gorging. We will be returning here many, many more times.

Mums does exactly what it says on the tin. On the menu it states that, «We believe ‘gourmet’ can and should be for everyone… and value prices should never be an excuse to use inferior ingredients or to serve up microscopic portions, we know you know better and so do we.» Love that. And that’s just what they do. We came for breakfast and got a heart y breakfast. My gal got a solid portion of Eggs Bennedict and I got pancaked with tons of streaky bacon, and they both were tasty and cheap. Service was a little slow and we did wait to get in, but it was fine and we still made our Edinburgh Fringe show with plenty of time. It’s never going to be gourmet but they know that and they do that well. Recommended.

As advertised– solid authentic comfort food. Would return for breakfast, but would avoid if terribly busy, service very slow but good worth the wait.

You know what, mums is a place I always end up returning to when my family comes to visit. Why? Because it’s simple, good value, welcoming and has a simple menu that everyone can get something they like. It’s good home style cooking, with no pretentiousness at all. Mainly though, I come back because they only seem to employ the nicest folk on the planet. Every single time I have been in to eat, the staff have been so lovely and chill. They seem to know when you want a wee chat and a giggle or if you need left alone to ponder life and existence. A good all rounder, family friendly down to earth place. Recommended.

Mums is a fun place to eat. The food is solid and the staff are super friendly. I went with a large group, and we had to split up to fit into the tables. The stag made this really enjoyable because they ran messages back and forth between the two tables. They put a lot of effort in to make sure we had s good time for dinner. Great food, perfect for groups and families, and an overall fun and memorable place to go!

I am visiting Scotland for the week and visited Mums based on the Unilocal rating. It did not disappoint! Huge steak pie, fresh out of the oven and flaky– perfection. I also had vegetarian sausage, carrots and broccoli, with mash and onion gravy. It was all delish. We topped it off with treacle which was warm from the oven with ice cream. Good portions and fresh ingredients. I would def recommend if you want to check out Scottish food

Rough and tumble, simple, homely, the definition of a greasy spoon(but the spoons aren’t actually greasy). Large portions of classic comfort food. Hilariously posed poster on the wall of an overgrown man and a large, matronly, mum-like lady serving him a giant plate of mash. Not the most beautiful or charming space, but it doesn’t need to be. As a vegetarian I was very impressed by the choice of two types of veggie sausage and a large range of mashes and meat-free gravies. We ordered the mushroom Wellington as well: everything was satisfying and homely. There was something wrong with my coffee, but oh well. Are there charming spaces with yummier food? Yes. Will they cost a little more? Probably. But will Mum’s do? Absolutely. A solid four stars.

Great service, good prices, yummy food, and filling portions. I had the Mums classic, which was alright(not really up my alley – I can’t get past the idea of black pudding), but my friends both ordered the pancake stack, and it was AMAZING. Don’t be an idiot – get it. Pancakes layered with bacon and drenched in maple syrup are a great idea. Our server was also really helpful while ordering and saw how tired we were(red eye flight the day right after we graduated… bad idea) and brought us a complimentary order of tea to wake us up for the rest of our day. :)

«vintage» restaurant with nice food and nice music(oldies), the sausages with mash won’t disappoint you. Good place to taste the traditional British dishes with a bit of american influence. Maybe the service a bit slow from the perspective of a tourist who want to do every thing fast to see more, but anyway a good restaurant.

Excellent sausages especially the pork and chive with cheese and onion mash. A tradition for me and my partner every time we come here. Never had a bad experience in 7 years. Also do a really tasty breakfast!

Great comfort food that any mum would make for a child! Order sausages! Lamb and mint is the best! And the pie is also nice. Overall me and my bro are happy with the food and the price! Reasonable price. Will def go back if we have a chance!
