Biltong. Not dry, dry, dry, but not wet. One flavour biltong flavour, none of this hot or pepper or honey or whatever malarky. Go try it!

This little butcher is a little bit different than the usual family ran ones because it’s a producer of some very interesting South African meat products. My boyfriend bought some Biltong which to me looked and smelled like a fatter Peperami. He took me there last time we were both in Edinburgh because a South African guy that he works with had told him about it. Apparently the Biltong gets dryer the longer you have it; I suppose it’s like a South African version of beef jerky. He loved it. I did not. Apparently they do a whole raft of different South African meat products, many of which I had no idea what they were but I was assured that they are all lovely. The Biltong is a little expensive, but I suppose it’s something that you’d buy every now and then for a little treat. It’s on the way to Murrayfield stadium too, so I guess popping in here for some Biltong to have with a pre-rugby lager is perfect for guys that love the egg shaped ball.

This has got to be the best butchers shop in Edinburgh, the quality of the meat is superb. I especially like his haggis and pork sausages which he makes himself. He also does a good selection of South African produce. His prices are not cheap but you certainly get quality.
