Holi One Colour Festival landed in Edinburgh last weekend. It borrows the fun aspects of the Indian Colour Festival of a similar name, but there is no religion involved. The short description is: dress in white clothes, throw paint at eachother and dance. The Holi One festival is held all over the world and this July was the first EVER in Edinburgh. Ticket prices for this day varied, but in general it was around £25– £30 for a ticket and around £5 — £10 for specialist powder paints. They provided special transfer buses to get in and out of the Gypsy Brae Recreation Grounds. But me and my friend took a taxi from the Shore — which was about £10. This event is for over 18’s only. No Credit Cards accepted on the day, cash only. On arrival we had to go through security. This is to prevent glass, your own drinks, drugs and what not to enter the grounds. So we entered and in the next few minutes we were covered in orange paint, because«we looked way too white» — well that broke us in proper. The party was in full swing, people were dancing around the stage, lounging in the grass, buying beer, cocktail and burgers. It was a nice and small area, but it carried the atmosphere of proper summer rave party, but a lot more mellow. People covering each other in paints. Taking pictures of each other and giving free hugs. Yup free hugs, whether you knew them or not. Every hour on the hour there was a massive invite to throw your paint up in the air, or at eachother, mixed with water(sticks better that way) — This created a colour feast worthy of a beach party on Ibiza. With the bands and DJs playing on stage and the multi coloured dancing crowd, it was quite surreal — was I really in Edinburgh? Around 10pm last paint throws were announced and were handed plastic bin liners, to prevent seats in buses and taxies getting all covered in paint. It was a brilliant evening!
