I always forget how expensive hotels in Edinburgh can be! My friend used to live here… so if I had events/meetings I would visit her and buy her dinner(rather than forking out for a hotel) Now she’s moved to Tokyo, I needed a place to stay, but I didn’t want to spend over £100 a night… Hotel Halcyon came to the rescue. The hotel is run by a sweet Scottish couple. It is very convenient(less than 10 minutes walk from Edinburgh Waverley station.) and the prices include a lovely cooked breakfast… cooked freshly, rather than buffet style. My single room was clean, quiet and had a nice view to the garden all for £58. Bargain. * They didn’t seem to have wifi, but I managed to use the connection from the hotel next door…

This hotel benefits from an awesome location. On a lovely quiet street, with houses only on one side(A Georgian Terrace that I think sets some kind of record in terms of uninterrupted length). There is a park with a hill up behind the hotel. At the same time the area is very central with lots of pubs and places to eat just a couple of minutes walk away. The main sights of the city are not too far off though. Add a nice room, a comfortable bed and lots of handy brochures suggesting things to do locally and you’re sorted. right? Well it is a decent place to stay but like most hotels in Edinburgh is hugely overpriced. I can count the number of times I have paid over 50 quid for a hotel room on the fingers of. well I’d probably need both hands, but the point is that it does not happen often. So when I pay 60 a night I expect more, so issues with the hot water and rubbish curtains are more irksome than they would otherwise be. Wasn’t too impressed by the brekkie either(didn’t bother getting up for it after the first morningnothing to do with being out late in taverns. No sir!). I’ll shop around again next time, but wouldn’t rule out staying again. P.s No TVs in the rooms doesn’t bother me but might some people.
