A lovely butcher in the heart of Stockbridge! I went for the first time this week in search of a good steak. The butcher himself was lovely and helpful in assisting me to pick out the right steak. So I got two t-bones, my favourite. If you’re going to buy a t-bone prepare to get a mammoth steak– two steaks were 1.5kg. And they’re cut per request with a saw, which of never seen before. I’m not sure if £25 is considered orivey since its my first time buying decent steak in Edinburgh, but it was well worth it! I used the reverse sear method to cook the steaks because they were so huge and managed to cook them perfectly. They were divine! I will definitely make this a regular place to buy my meat but might go for a smaller cut next tine– I had enough steak left over for you next two days.

After searching for a butchers that cater for my boxer dogs(raw diet) I came across George Bower. Couldnt be happier as usually spend a fortune in a local super market! Dog loves it and sits dribbling waiting for her dinner. Really pleased and will defiantly be back to stock up.

First time at this butcher’s. The butcher himself is a lovely guy and very good with dispensing advise on how to prepare your meat. we actually had a voucher to spend up to £20 and he kindly let us take our time and explaining everything as we were trying to make a choice. So now we had oxtail, a full rabbit, duck breasts and some venison stewing meat. the shop is a curiosity of sorts, with many taxidermy game adorning the walls, fresh rabbit and game hanging in the display window. it is however clean and minimally dressed. You can get pies, sauces, bacon, chicken, mince and whatnot. most prepared on the premises. As far as butchers go, this is the bulls bollox.

I have been at this butcher a couple of times and have never had a bad experience. George Bower has the most fantastic selection of game and poultry. e.g. if you want pheasant or venison, go and get it from here! I have bought pork fillet and a BBQ selection pack of chicken. They also sell all the other traditional products like sausages, meats, steak pies. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The shop itself has a lovely sort of old fashioned feel to it with the decoration.

This butchers for me has sadly gone downhill. Having purchased oxtail which went off after two days and then mince which was full of bone fragments. They don’t seem concerned either, wrote to them enclosing fragments 4 wks ago, they did not even respond. Lesson learned: Deal with face to face. I am giving them 2 stars for their steak which is good, zero for customer service. I. family & friends will not be returning to this butchers.

Another really good village butcher offering quality red meat, game, poultry and gourmet sausages. Friendly staff on hand to suggest possible meals and ways of preparing and cooking their produce and pretty reasonable prices too given the far superior quality to that offered by the big supermarket chains. The only criticism I can suggest is that they do have a bit too much pre-packed vacuum sealed meat, rather than having it on display and able to be individually selected by the customer. A small point only and not drastic enough to detract from a great butchers.

This is one of the best butchers around. It makes you appreciate what you are missing by buying shrink wrapped meat from the supermarket. Lots of seasonal local products such as pheasants and partridges and the meat is well matured. At busy times there is a queue right out on the pavement so they must be popular. Staff are all nice characters and one of the guys has such a rapport with the queue it turns out to be like a comedy routine. Well recommended, quite expensive, but you get the quality you pay for!

Great little butcher, with a very wide range of meat, including rarer animals such as guinea fowl and most game birds. The other day I went in and there were 3 crates of dead grouse on the floor, ready to be plucked and prepared. At least now I know the game isn’t frozen!

Overall a good butcher — nice staff, always happy to give recommendations if you’re not sure what to get for dinner! Meat has always been of good quality and tasty. Only issue I’d have is I have been in first thing in the morning and a lot of the meat has obviously been previously frozen. I was sold this meat with no warning not to re freeze which isn’t great. They have a great service where you can bring in game which you’ve shot yourself and they will give you the same type of bird which has been gutted and plucked for a reduced price. Fantastic chickens too!

One of my favourite Edinburgh buthchers, Bower’s is a local institution. It’s the place to go for the best quality meat around and they specialise in game which is always excellent. Staff are friendly, even if they are a little cheeky about their customers at times and its certainly worth the trip from the centre of town. If you are looking for a Turkey this Christmas, give them a phone as its been the tastiest we’ve had. Be prepared to have to wait in line to collect it though as most of the town seem to know about Bowers. Except you — and its time to change that!

Awesome butcher with hilariously chipper staff. It is pricey but the meat is worth it and not full of water like in the supermarkets. Also good pies and very superior chickens. You can tell them how much you want to spend and they’ll cut your meat to suit.

This legendary family butchers is a Stockbridge staple. It’d been around forever and it’s famous for its game. Don’t be put off by the ducks hanging from hooks as you walk in, the service is friendly and knowledgable and their christmas turkeys are second to none. The only problem is the prices, which are pretty high, but you get what you pay for, and its worth paying more for meat as good as this.
