Handy bar if you have a few minutes spare waiting on a bus as it’s right next to main bus-stop at Elm Row. Has good selection of drinks with house double vodka and mixer for £3, large tv’s showing all sports.

The exterior of the Elm Bar looks quite new or refurbished and that’s what initially drew me in on a wet and windy day; my jeans were wet, my mouth was dry and a wee packet of KP crisps were just what the doctor ordered. My Dad was with me and he likes a good old man’s pub so I thought the Elm Bar was a safe bet. We settled into some comfortable seats with a pint and a packet of crisps each and watched the sport on television, which was right up my Dad’s street. We actually stayed for a couple of pints, and my Dad struck up a conversation with the barman who seemed very nice and gave us some good recommendations of places to visit in the Leith area. Comfortable and friendly pub.

The Elm Bar seems to have a bit more life to it than the other ‘old man’ pubs on Leith Walk. The décor inside, although not especially modern, still makes the place feel comfortable and welcoming to customers of all ages. The drinks are priced as you wpould expect of a pub in the area with pints costing around £3 and spirits slightly more. It seems to make an effort to encourage a younger and more lively clientele by showing high profile sporting events on its plasma screen. When we were in last year it was showing American football on ESPN as well as the English Premiership matches. This helps to set the Elm Bar aside from the other more standard pubs in the area and the food it served also looked pretty good. The couple next to us both got served sausage and mash which looked and smelled quite tempting! I doubt we will ever be back just because it’s too far away from where we now live, but if you’re in the area then it has a surprising amount to offer.

My sports-mad friend is a fan of this place with its big screens and showings of all the major sporting events whether its football, rugby, tennis or Formula 1.

I think the Elm Bar looks better from the outside, I’d walked past on a number of occasions and noted the large number of hand pumps for real ale and thought it would be worth a try. I was really disappointed when I went in to find that only on real ale was available. I also found it not the friendliest bar that I’d ever been in and down my pint and left.

I went here after watching a football match at Hibs. It’s one of the pubs on the way back to the centre of town from the stadium. Bit of a locals only type of place but the pub food was okay, and very cheap. They also do a few offers on drinks so it’s a cheap place to visit. As long as the barman gives you the right change. I bought £8 of drinks with a £20 note but only got £2 change. I complained immediately but the barman swore i’d only given him £10. The manager had to take the till away and count out the money before eventually coming back and giving me my correct change. They were very apologetic but still.

The Elm Bar has a Victorian look with a large island bar and a wee quiet neuk in the corner. Two cracking fireplaces, great wood and glass partitions and excellent old photos of Leith. Working old railway clock and silly signs on the walls give the place a bit of atmosphere This is a real locals’ bar with a good variety of cask ales. Quite an unspoilt treasure really, well worth a visit.
