Clarks shoes = a-OK. Clarks’s customer service — miserable. So it’s a Saturday, worst day of the week to go shopping, so my expectations are not high. At the doorway, are some fab boots. Upstairs, no boots in sight. The place is full to the rafters with customers — in the women’s section. We give up trying to look, head downstairs, and I see the boots again. I want the boots. We decide to ask the boys milling around on the ground floor in the very empty gents area. ‘Sorry, we don’t do ladies shoes — you have to go upstairs for that’. In my head, I am thinking, ‘but you have walkie talkies! and phones! Can’t you check to see if my size in stock rather than me going upstairs and fighting the mêlée?’ Seriously, one customer downstairs versus the mob upstairs. Up I go. This time, I am greeted by a lady immediately and I asked for my boots. Then I wait. I play the game of here’s a shoe in my size, let’s try it on! We keep an eagle eye out for a girl with a pair of boots emerging. I get fascinated by one shop assistant running around clutching the same shoe for the entire duration of my visit. I look up other Clark’s locations. The SR is getting cranky. I’m getting cranky. Boot shopping isn’t fun anymore. No-one seems to care that I’m here, and bootless, and there are other desolate faces around me. That shop assistant is still running around with the same damn shoe. We buy the shoes at another Clark’s location. Never saw the girl, or my boot again. Alas.

I love the shoes from Clarks. I wonder if it’s a sign of maturity that I can no longer totter about in ridiculous high heels that pinch and rub the whole night. These days I’m all about sensible shoes that are pretty and really, really comfy. Clarks is the place to get them. This is a bit of an awkward shoe shop on Princes Street. The ladies section is upstairs and a little bit tucked away, and once up there the space isn’t very large so there’s a lot to squeeze in. On my latest visit the place was absolutely packed. I’ve never seen the shop so busy before. I had a bit of a wait, but after five minutes or so a shop assistant gave me the boots I was asking for. After wandering around trying to avoid the throngs of people at the mirrors, she re-appeared and helped me out with different size requests etc, even though the shop was hoaching. So kudos for the customer service! I got my boots, despite the really busy atmosphere, and even managed to get a bit of a discount. So double thumbs up. Just make sure you go when it’s a little bit quieter…
