If I am walking down Dundas Street I can’t resist the opportunity to pop into Archipelago and grab a loaf. They usually have something unusual and a bit special. Sourdoughs, ryes, and classic bloomers. The staff have always been friendly and happy to talk through their breads. They don’t always have huge quantities so if it’s late in the day it might be slim pickings, but it’s worth a check if your passing by. It’s also a nice little café selling soups/salads/sandwiches and cakes. I’ve only ever had their bread but I’d consider it for a bite to eat if I was in the area. It doesn’t take card unfortunately which is a shame as I rarely have cash. It’s not the cheapest loaf but it seems in line with most artisanal bakeries. I think it’s worth it and any time I’ve gotten bread here it has been rather quickly polished off.

Changing locations soon but offer gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options which they tweet and share on facebook. Mainly take away and open till around 3pm each day as all products are freshly made on the premises each day. Had gf bread from here, straight out the oven. It was small but tasty and lasted a couple of days. Soup options commonly offered too so popular for the lunchtime crowd.

What a cute little nook, hidden in plain sight! Walked past this place a million times without realising it was there… but i’m glad i did! When you descend the stairs you go through a door and into a tiny corridor. It’s here that the tower of baked goods lives… from freshly baked breads of differing sizes, to baked treats both healthy and not so virtuous. It’s very much a grab and go place, and you feel like you’re pretty much right in the kitchen, but i like the rustic and artisan feel it gives it. The lady who runs the place is super friendly and chatty, and talked me through all of her bakes. It was a tough choice, but I plumped for a small millers loaf and a ’ free from everything’ slice, which was packed full of deliciousness but sweetened only with bananas and dates, so it was totally healthy! The loaf was the vehicle for my avocado toast for a few days and was pretty much to die for. A great little place to buy some rustic home bakes — and have a chat with the sweet owner, who really knows her stuff!
