The amalgamation of cuisines from neighbouring countries is something that’s always fascinated me. Having loved Turkish and Greek food with its Middle Eastern influences for as long as I can remember I recently had the pleasure of trying Bulgarian food. And I’m here to report it’s rather delightful indeed. It helps to have a Bulgarian friend who knows their way around the various sauces, meats and breads but I found the staff here to be extremely friendly and helpful. Eastern European grocery shops of the Polish variety are scattered across Manchester and have always been a pit stop for me to pick up my Polish sweets and speciality chocolates. I now have another specialty food shop on my radar from where I can discover more taste bud tingling delights. I highly recommend the red sauce«Lutenitza» which is like a spread which goes with bread and pretty much anything. Made with a rich blend of roasted spicy fefferoni and sweet peppers this could also act as an excellent barbecue/burger sauce. Another recommendation is the Banitsa pastry. This Bulgarian cheese pastry comes with a filling of spinach and is oh so heavenly. I love the subtle differences between Bulkan and traditional foods from the surrounding Mediterranean countries and can’t wait to go back to see where this particular foodie road of discovery leads to.
