Jimmy’s World Grill and Bar is situated just on the outskirts of Derby City Centre. An impressive looking restaurant, the outer parts primarily made of glass which gives the restaurant lots of natural light. The restaurant itself would probably comfortably seat 200 people, but although it is modern in décor, the nature of the restaurant itself, makes it feel a little like a canteen. I quite liked the montage of movie stars and famous people that surrounded the large well stocked bar, and the spiral staircase that led to the toilets was architecturally impressive. Free WiFi courtesy of the Cloud is a nice touch too. This was a works outing and the buffet type restaurant is a set price for as much as you can eat, the price depending on the day you go, Friday and Saturday being the most expensive at £15. I have to say, I’m not the biggest fan of this type of restaurant, but everything was set up very well, there were stations where you can have freshly made food made to order like naans etc., and lots of constantly replenishing dishes from a wide variety of cuisines. Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, Italian, French and Indian, all present in an eclectic mix. No fixed way to have your dishes, simple grab a plate and go and pick what you want. Being a creature of habit, I began with the starters; the Sesame Toast, vegetable pakoras and sticky barbecue chicken wings were impressive, the aromatic duck and yuk sung, two of my favourite dishes were not, the Yuk Sung too greasy and the duck tasteless. I didn’t expect the dishes to be as good as a specialised restaurant, but some were disappointingly wide of the mark. Our waiting on staff, were heavily promoting the drinks, between and during courses, I suppose that’s where they make the most money, but he did seem like a hard sell, as did leaving a pad of cards on the desk to fill in our details, so we could receive ‘special offers’, too pushy! On to the mains, an impressive selection on offer, cards and electronic displays, explaining the nature of the dish, and its country of origin. Primarily Indian, Chinese and French dishes; the most impressive course I ate on the night, the paneer curry and the chinese noodles being a particular highlight. The nature of a buffet restaurant, means you obliged to try all courses, the selection of fruit, ice cream and mini cheesecakes, were good, but largely forgettable. I enjoyed the evening, mainly due to the company of my friends and a few impressive dishes. I wasn’t sure about all you can eat buffets before I went, and this visit has done nothing to increase my liking for them.

Awful. Even the chocolate fountain is watered down. Avoid this place

Good décor and good selection of food is the plus. Staff appear to have been instructed to pester customers to buy more drinks. Example: 4 x Cobra in bottles £19.96. Value for money 4⁄10. Much better places in Derby to eat without being charged excessive price for drinks.

Wish there was a 0 rating because that’s what I would give to this place. It needs to be shut down by the Environmental Agency for serving raw meat! The chicken skewers were blatantly raw! The staff are demoralised and can’t be asked to do much. My friend took my 7 year old there and the poor child got food poisoning and was sick for days. AVOID! The décor and location is fabulous but beware! You risk getting sick with bad food and bad attitude.
