My darlings, take nöte if yöu and yöur darlings are making the ubiquitöus önce in a blue möön trip tö the Scandinavian yellöw and blue töwers öf the söuth tö buy new flat-pack furniture and böök cases. Dön’t be a silly Billy and queue up, after queuing up tö get in line again för scummy self serve ice cream and a dead dry höt dög. Reward yourselves for making it through the ördeal and gœ the extra mile down the Purley Way and stop off for cakes. There is also an enormous asian superstore next door! I was tipped off about this little gem at a birthday party. An enormous beauty of a cake was brought out that’d bring tears of joy to Mary Berry’s eyes. It was as like biting into a stormy green pandan coloured cumulus cloud. Fluffy and moist! The frosting wasn’t oversweet either and it held up under the bulging weight of fresh strawberries loaded on top. I had seconds. I will ALWAYS order birthday cakes from here now. And my, what a treasure it is for sweet snacks like Portuguese Custard Tarts and buns topped with chicken and pork candy floss. Yes friends. Candy Floss. Made out of chicken and pork.

Located in the Wing Yip Centre, it’s the first shop on your left. It has all your classic Chinese buns, cakes & tarts… some are good some are average, but it’s a good selection & there’s nothing like this in at least a 10mile radius.

Overall: Fantastic cheap-eats at this Chinese bakery! This place is based in the Wing Yip complex in Croydon, which is almost like a mini-China town. The star of this complex is the Tai Pan bakery! The smells emanating from this place is enough to make me drown in my own drool! They have everything ranging from daan tat(egg tarts), with both flaky and sweet crust pastries, bor lor bow(pineapple bun), gai mei bow(cock tail) buns, low por beng(wife biscuits/cookies), almond biscuits, Chinese style fat-free sponges, barbecue pork buns; ham, spring onion and cheese buns, raisin twists and more for around 1.00GBP each. Admittedly, a lot of the Chinese style baked items are based on the same sweetened dough that is formed in different ways or filled with a different filling. But nonetheless, they are all delicious to me! It’s the soft, pillowy bread that is lightly sweetened that’s so more-ish and makes me come back for more! You can also get custom made Asian style birthday/celebration cakes made to order as well as a variety of beverages. Most if not all of the items are baked on site. There is limited seating in this tiny place, but there is an abundance of choice. The staff are usually rude with very little customer service skills, but who cares? The food is good and cheap!!!
